Talk With Mom
Ambrosia woke to the sound of her phone's blaring ringtone of "Doesn't Feel A Thing Like Falling" by Taking Back Sunday only to find it to be one in the afternoon and her mother was the caller. Answering her phone she gave a groggy hello.
"Ambrosia why do you sound so tired?" Her mother's voice questioned.
"Because I was asleep. What's up mom?" She asked sitting up in her bed.
"All you do is sleep the day away. Why don't you get up early and do something with the beautiful day God has given us?" Her mother asked completely ignoring the second part of the response.
"Because I like the night, it's dark an mysterious. Never know what may jump out at you in the dark, it's eerie. The sun is just way to bright and can burn you."
"You're not a vampire, quit acting like you're going to burst into flames if you step in the sun." That comment earned a roll of the eyes from Ambrosia.
"You wanted an answer to why I sleep all day so I gave you one, besides way less people to deal with at night."
"You need to get out and meet people. Make new friends, date a guy, learn to talk to people."
"I can talk to people, when they share my interests that is, and I don't really need a guy in my life to make me happy."
"You're not going to find people who share the interest of jabbing a coat hanger down your throat or many people that love that insane music you listen to. Meet normal people without nose rings and tattoos." The disgust was evident in her mother's voice as she spoke.
"Mom, there's nothing wrong with nose rings or tattoos. Second I'm not jabbing a coat hanger down my throat, I'm learning to swallow a sword. Also I have met a lot of nice people at concerts and just recently at the Venice beach boardwalk."
"You met people? As in people you can be close with and call friends?"
"Yes mom." Ambrosia sighed climbing out of bed and to the bathroom turning the phone to speaker as she began to bring a brush through her hair.
"What are they like?"
"Their really cool and just all around nice people."
"How did you meet them exactly?" There was a certain tone to her mother's voice that just couldn't be placed.
"They work at a place on the boardwalk." Ambrosia was trying to avoid actually telling her mother where they worked, but her mother was one full of questions and must know every detail.
"Where exactly, what's the place called?"
"Don't judge them when I tell you, they really are sweet people..."
"I won't." One of the biggest lies in the world when it came to her mother.
"It's a place called the Venice Beach Freakshow-"
"Ambrosia." Her mother groaned not liking the answer.
"What? It's really cool, they're performers and Todd who owns the place has so many cool, rare animals. It's really neat, though I haven't had a chance to see all of them yet."
"And let me guess, there's people who swallow swords there too."
"Yes mother, there are and one of them has offered to help me learn. Please don't think badly of these people, until you meet them and see how kind they truly are. Look I've got to go, promised Trenton we'd explore the town some more. Talk to you later, love you!" Ambrosia said hanging up before her mother could say anything else.
She loved her mom, but she just didn't understand. She judged before she truly knew anything about the thing or people. That was part of the reason Ambrosia had to move out, she should have know she couldn't fully get away from the watchful eye of her mother.
With a sigh Ambrosia ran a hand through her dark hair and looked over at her cat who decided to sit beside her on the bathroom counter.
"Kieran, what are we going to do with her?" She questioned, running a hand over the feline's soft black fur and earned a soft meow in return as the cat purred into her hand. She smiled softly at the cat before getting ready for the day.
