Destiny's War

3

The letter fell to the floor as I burst into a heap of bitter tears. The 1st of September was tomorrow! At that split second Mother’s gentle tread could be clearly heard as her dear, round, rosy face appeared. “What’s that?” she suspiciously questioned the letter now lying motionless at my feet. I couldn’t reply I was so overcome with grief. She anxiously examined it, a sincere expression fixed on her. Suddenly, she let out a soft whimper and clutched her chest. A few tears splashed down her pale cheeks. I immediately rushed over to her, unable to bear her forlorn weeping self. She clung feebly to me as if she could never let go.
At the breakfast table, constant snuffles sounded as the dreadful news about Father sank in. A great cloud of sorrow hung miserably over the once cheerful house. Sofia and I helped Father pack his things. When Mother and Father had gone downstairs to speak and Sofia was in the lavatory, I couldn’t help holding Father’s dressing gown to my cheek and allowing several heartbroken tears.
