The Death of A Knight

Like Yesterday

I get a text
Telling me to call
It’s important
From boyfriend’s mum

My mum calls
Something is wrong
I can tell
Even before the call ends

She gets up
And turns to me
And tells me
Steven has died

My heart sinks
In her arms I fall
I start to cry
My world has ended

Post-mortem done
Nothing found
No reason
For his death

I go to his house
Meet with his family
But I can’t face
Seeing Steven dead

My 21st birthday comes
It should be happy
But it’s not
It’s Steven’s funeral

The service
Is over
We head
To the cemetery

I ride with his family
In the car that follows
The hearse
I see the coffin

We get there
It’s raining
Which is good
It hides people’s tears

The coffin is lowered
Into the ground
People throw dirt
I have a red rose

Burial ends
Everybody leaves
But my heart stays
Dead like Steven

All this
Runs through
My head as if
It happened yesterday

Truth is time has past
This November
Will be
Three years
