Can't Lose You

Chapter 9- Short Tempered

I wake up the next morning in bed with Leland snoring in my ear as we lay spooning. I smile to myself thinking about last night and how we ended up in bed...it was a great night! When I finally snap out of my flashback of last night I decide I should get up, work starts soon anyway but I thought I'd let Leland sleep in a little longer cause he must have been exhausted. I gently lift his arm up and try to slip away but I feel his arm pulling me back.

"Where do you think you're going?" He says kissing my neck.
"No Leland don't! We have to get ready for work" I try pulling away but he's way to strong and I soon give up losing the will to fight.
"Lets throw a sicky, another me and you day"
"No way! We're after another girl today, I'm not missing it" I leaned forward and gave him a quick kiss and his grip on me loosened enough for me to pull away.
"Hey!" He called after me as I ran to jump in the shower first.

Leland drove us to the office and we was immediately called into the main meeting room for the briefing of today's fugitive 'Akela Mahuiki'. I couldn't help but laugh when I heard her name as I found it ironic. Akela meaning 'noble' and for someone on the run it wasn't exactly a fitting name. However I soon stopped my little laugh when we was informed that she was charged with assult after attacking her ex-boyfriend with some kind of weapon which we believed to be a bat. As Beth countinued reading out the police report about how Akela is short tempered and temperamental, I noticed everyone's gaze shift to look at me thinking I hadn't noticed. At first I just brushed it off, but when I thought about it, I had to question why they kept looking at me.
"Sorry am I missing something?" Beth stopped reading and everyone openly looked at me.
"What sweetheart?" Dog asked looking taken aback.
"You all keep looking at me thinking I haven't noticed."
"Well think about it Jess, who does she remind you of?" Duane Lee said chuckling and everyone joined in.
"I am not short tempered!" I said raising my voice a bit.
"Really? Then why you shouting?" Leland said raising his eyebrow at me with a big smirk on his face.
"Ohh shut up and wipe that smirk off your face or ill come over there and do it for you" I said laughing so it was clear to everyone I was joking. Leland put both his hands behind his head, leaned back in his seat and put his feet up on his desk... still smirking.
"Promises, promises" he said flashing me a wink.
I was just about to get and a walk over to him when Dog spoke up.
"Enough flirting you two! Lets get suited up"

There had been a bit of a change to today's plan. Me and Beth were hitting the front door with Dog behind us. Leland took one side while Duane Lee took the other making sure she couldn't bolt out the side windows like last time. And Justin was with us again, covering the back. On the drive here it was decided that I'd step in if she got mouthy towards Beth, which I found unnecessary as Beth would annihilate the poor girl anyway. I also checked that I had the right to defend myself if she attacked me; as like the police said, she's temperamental.

We walked up to the door and I banged on it with Beth shouting in my ear for her to come out 'nobly'. Surprisingly she did come out;but only for a slanging match. She came up to the screen door which was still shut, screaming and shouting insults at me and Beth. Beth was throwing them back at her like I knew she would but I decided to swallow my pride, keep my mouth shut and cuff her. I opened the door and she lunged at me, grabbing my hair which was in a nice messy bun and shoved me further into her house. When I turned around I was expecting to see someone cuffing her but I didn't, instead I saw her shutting the proper door and locking it; stopping the others from getting in.
"You think you can just barge into my house? You that dumb bitch?"
By this point I was back on my feet as she swung for me. However this time I was expecting it and I moved back slightly taking her by surprise and smacking her round the face, causing her to fall back on the floor. I quickly grabbed her arms and cuffed them behind her and made my way to unlock the door which was frantically being kicked from the outside. As I opened it, I had to jump back to avoid being kicked down by Leland's foot as it came flying towards me. Duane Lee and Dog quickly pushed past him and lifted Akela off the floor and dragged her outside where she had to face the wrath of Beth once again, and get cleaned up as I may have accidentally gave her a nose bleed. Leland quickly moved over to me and wrapped his arms around me.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah I'm absolutely fine, except that cow ruined my messy bun!"
Leland laughed as I said it and let go of me to look at my hair.
"It still looks good" he said putting his hand on my back and leading me back outside.
"Besides how can you ruin a messy bun? They're not supposed to be perfect" he said and we both laughed. We was walking over to the car Akela was getting cleaned up in as I wanted to be professional and shake hands and move on, but as I got within arms length of her she flashed me a smug grin and laughed in my face.
"Is that the best you got? You fucking ugly piece of worthless shit!"
Luckly for her Lelands reactions were so quick, as his arms holding me back were the only thing that stopped me from giving her a permanent make-over.

After she had been booked in we all headed back to the office as Dog still wanted to catch another fugitive while it was still light out. As Dog was looking through the files with the boys; picking who looked the most easiest, Beth called me into her office. She explained that I just had to run through what happened so she could have a report about it if Akela mentioned it to anyone. It didnt take long but by the time I was done I was tired, and didnt feel 100%. As I was about to leave Beth's office for the briefing, I remember standing up and coming crashing down again.

Lelands POV-

We finally all agreed on an easy file which had the most recent information and addresses we could hit. I was sat at my desk watching dad and Duane Lee mucking around, when we heard a thud. At first I wasn't to interesting in what caused it, assuming Beth had dropped something; which happens often with the length of her nails. It wasn't until I heard Beth screaming for help and someone to call an ambulance that I got up from my chair and was sprinting towards her office. I got to the door where I saw Beth on her knees shaking Jess in an attempt to wake her up. I felt my heart drop as I stood there watching, frozen.
