Catch My Breath

Prologue

Everything was foreign. Nothing was the same as he remembered. The world had changed during his seventy year slumber, and after three days of wondering the streets of his old home upon awakening from his sleep, Steve Rogers had come to the conclusion he wasn’t going to like what he was seeing. Resting upon a weary park bench, Steve could only watch what was unfolding in front of him.

He felt out of place. He was now in a world were equality included women and that humbleness and humility were aspects of character people barely used. Technology was now the new way of living, and clothing seemed to make up for character. This frustrated him. This angered him.
With his hands laced together, Steve longed to find some peace in his situation. Everyone he knew was now dead. Every precise piece of his past had been destroyed. Everything he was use to, comfortable with was gone.

On the outside, Steve may have alluded to have been calm, but on the inside, he was breaking down. He was offered help by the people who had defrosted him for assistance to adjusting to this world, but he refused. Steve was determined to figure out this world on his own. However, it was this sense of pride that was leading him into a psychological downfall.

He thought he could handle it, after witnessing everything HYDRA had thrown at him, Steve Rogers thought he had seen it all.

He was wrong.

So indescribably wrong.

He was finally waking up to the fact he couldn’t mentally handle everything happening before him. If he would have just known, given a glimpse of what was awaiting for him after he had driven that HYDRA plane into the Arctic, he would have considered Peggy’s options.

Peggy…

Steve couldn’t help but tense at the thought of his past love. He had missed their date. He was late for seventy years. If only there was a way to have stopped that plane, he would have been there on time, on time for their date, their wedding, their first born; everything. Everything he could have had with her.

But he had to do it.

He was in service to his country. The country before his own; that was his mindset when joining the army, when subjecting to the super solider serum, when diving into the frozen ocean. His country before his own; that’s what he was made for.

This was everything he signed up for.

Sighing deeply, Steve turned his gaze to the figure that had taken up the space next to him on the bench. She had occupied the spot for a while, taking a seat there when he was examining his thoughts. He hadn’t paid that much attention to her as she didn’t pay that much attention to him. All of her was in the small book she held in her hand.

Steve couldn’t help but look her over. She was petite; small and delicate, looking as though with the wrong move she could easily break. Her skin tone was light, smooth and creamy. Her facial features were dark and sharp, but held a beauty hard to comprehend. Her hair was in dark tresses, looking messy but fitting her face perfectly, and her eyes, a unique hazel color he wasn’t used to seeing. She was a fairly pretty dame.

She seemed different.

Steve thought it rare to find someone within a world of technology to go to the park and read a book. In fact, not many of the women from his era would take the time out to enjoy a good reading. This was something new to him, but unlike everything else that was new to him, he approved of this changed.

“A soldier?”

“Huh?”

“Are you a solider?” Her eyes lifted from the book to Steve with an inquiring gaze. She was British. Something that completely threw Steve off. She was British.

“Uh, yes, ma’am,”

“I could tell,” Her eyes moving back to the book. “You had the stance like a soldier. Did you just return from the war? You look like you have.”

Steve only nodded, unsure how to reply. She was his first outside interaction since waking up. He didn’t want to say anything that might give himself away.

“Not much of a talking, are you?” She had completely removed her face from the book and turned to Steve. “Forgive me; I was just trying to make chit-chat. I’m not a talker myself, but you seemed tense and it looked like you needed it.”

“Oh…no,” Steve answered, aiming his gaze to the ground. “Just…getting used to things. But thank you,”

She only nodded in response and paused. “How long were you gone?”

“Longer than I planned,”
