Death's Shaddow

Prologue

Shaddow had no memory of her parents. All she knew was that when she was very young she had been adopted by an elderly English man by the name of Watari. He had taken her into his care after discovering her amazing talent with the spoken word. By the time she was six she had become fluent in English, Japanese, French, Spanish, and Italian. She was able to understand different tongues better than any grown man or women alive. Watari had taken her into his charge in order to care for her an nurture her talent so that one day she might be able to use it for good.
As well as her astounding grasp of language Shaddow also had a great love for literature that could never quite be satisfied. She spent all of her free time studying ancient plays and stories that had long since been forgotten by the modern world but her favorite was an author everyone knew; William Shakespeare. She was obsessed with the Bard and his mysterious life. When she wasn’t taking jobs translating both speech and the written word she was studying Shakespeare as if she were going to find some lost treasure hidden in his words.
Shaddow spent all her time in a giant cavern above an even more grand room. It contained a lavish bedroom and bathroom as well as a large study area with computers that would baffle even the most intelligent programmer’s to date. In the middle of her study space was a large dome overlooking the room below. It was like a two way mirror so that she could see everything going on downstairs and no one knew she was ever watching.

The room had been the brain child of Shaddow and Watari after deciding she needed a private space of her own to work. Shaddow took jobs from all over the world translating ancient texts, manuscripts, letters of peace and war and anything else that needed a delicate touch. There was only one expert in the field and Shaddow was it.

Shaddow’s life was quiet and simple mostly. Except for one thing. L. L had also been living with Watari since he was a young boy and Shaddow assumed he was about four years older than her although she didn’t know his actual age. L had been around for longer than she had and he was also gifted in so many unique ways. L was a detective, but not just any detective. He could solve any case the world threw at him in record time. He was called on by parliaments and police departments from every corner of the globe to track down hardened criminals that no one else could catch.
None of this was the problem with L however. The problem was that for as long as Shaddow could remember she had been in love with L. She loved the way he perched on his chair like a bird ready to fly away. She loved the way his hair was always a shaggy mess and he had dark charcoal eyes that gave him the perfect poker face. She loved the way he was always chewing on his thumb and would only eat sweets. She was so head over heels with L that sometimes she spent her whole day watching him work from her secret space instead of doing her own work.

It didn’t help that L had always treated Shaddow like his most prized possession. He cared for her when she was ill, played with her when she was bored, held her when she was scared and read her stories before bed. L was Shaddow’s knight in shining armour and she adored him for it.

Life went on quietly for the most part for Watari, L, and Shaddow. L solved crimes, Watari ran his orphanage and Shaddow assisted in translating and worked on her many projects. That is until a criminal named Kira emerged and started killing off murderers, thieves, rapists. Anyone he deemed unfit to live in the world. L took on this case with a passion she had never seen before.

L started working with a smaller number of Japanese police that formed a task force. L was working with one man in particular Chief Sochiro Yagami and his son, Light Yagami, who L was convinced was Kira. Light was also romantically involved with a young women named Misa Amane who was thought to be a copycat “second Kira.” Of course L had no idea how Light was killing his victims and thus couldn’t prove his guilt to the task force. However L was intelligent and resourceful. Eventually he managed to back Light into a corner by arresting Miss Amane. Light volunteered to put himself into confinement to prove his innocence. Criminals stopped dying…for a while.

So this is the first Death Note fanfiction I've ever written and it's the first of anything I've written since I was 15. It takes place in a slight AU just after Light is released from confinement but instead of the handcuffs I'm thinking he might just be kept at headquarters. I haven't decided yet. Obviously centered around an OC Shaddow. :)
