“Hi Grandpa” Brian smiled as he sat on a chair. He was a student in Huntington Beach High School, in his sophomore year. He’s been so busy with friends, guitar and what not that he hadn’t had the chance to visit his grandfather

“Hello Brian... how is school?” Grandpa Haner wheezed. Grandpa Haner was Brian Edgar Haner, close to his son and grandson’s names. But nonetheless different

“It’s been great... Jimmy uhmm.... he started dating Johnny a few weeks back and they’re really happy together” Brian smiled. He felt slightly envious of his friend’s relationship but he was happy for them

“Ahh... to be young and in love... I remember such a time” Grandpa Haner smiled. Brian smiled as well, holding his grandfather’s hand. Grandpa Haner was a war veteran for WWII, but a few years back he became too frail to live alone and ended up in a nursing home. It broke Brian’s heart to be away from his grandfather but it was for the best

“That must’ve been a long time ago” Brian chuckled. Grandpa Haner chuckled and nodded. “It was war time.... the beginning of World War 2 in 1939... I was stationed in Italy for patrols when I fell in love... but then Italy joined Hitler...” Grandpa Haner blinked away tears. “I miss him so much Brian.... he was so beautiful.. I loved him with all my heart” Grandpa Haner wheezed

Brian’s eyes widened at that. His grandfather was gay? Maybe that’s why he never married when he returned to America.

“He had the most beautiful eyes.... so green and happy. I never saw my Zee again after the war...” Grandpa Haner’s eyes closed and his breathing slowed down

“Grandpa.. Grandpa!!” Brian shook his grandpa’s shoulder “I can see my love again now...” Grandpa Haner smiled. Brian shooh his grandpa’s shoulder harder but... he lay quiet. “No! Please no!!” Brian ran out to the room and flung the door open. “I NEED A NURSE!!” He screamed into the hallway and was ushered out of the room as the doctors and nurses tried to revive his grandfather

Brian stared at the open coffin, where his grandpa laid and a new wave of tears racked through him. His grandfather died of old age, but Brian knew he eagerly waited for death... to be reunited with his love.

An old man with a Zimmer frame shuffled up to the coffin and laid red poppies, smiling softly

Brian then stepped up and laid a bundle of lilies next to the poppies. “Grandpa.... thank you for being there for me... teaching me everything. May you rest in peace in Heaven...” Brian trailed off, a hand was on his shoulder and he jumped slightly. He turned around and was facing the man with the Zimmer frame.

“You look so much like your grandfather when I met him” The man smiled, green eyes shining. “You knew my grandfather way back then?” Brian blinked. “I did... I met him in the war, oh forgive my manners. I’m Zachariah Baker” Zachariah smiled. “Pleasure to meet you... uhmm this may seem like an odd question but did my grandfather ever mention someone named Zee to you?” Brian asked as Zachariah’s eyebrows shot up. “He might’ve... why?” Brian sighed. “Because.... my grandfather said that he fell in love with someone named Zee and he still loves him...”

Zachariah gave a sly smile. “Well... I don’t think I know anyone... now I have to go.... I’m sorry for your lost” Zachariah gave another secretive grin before shuffling away
