Smoke and Mirrors.

I continued to unpack the boxes, leaving stuff scattered all around. Max seemed to get into more things than I did. I was still in shock that I remembered Jacoby, after all these years. It seemed crazy. A couple of Internet searches revealed he was married and had two kids. I couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy. That was supposed to be me, not some bimbo he knocked up while on tour.

“Do you ever think about tracking him down? Like just finding out why he left and never came back? It might help you Ava, or at least bring some closure to you,”

Matthew’s voice startled me; I sighed and shrugged my shoulders.

“I dunno Matthew, it seems…kind of stupid. He’s married and has kids and shit. He gave me up for the fame and fortune,”

“Well maybe you should go back to Vacaville, go see if his mom can get up with him or whatever. Does she still live in the same place?”

“Yeah, she does, she still lives next to Momma,” I smiled, remembering all those summers where Jacoby and I would stay out late, doing shit we had no business doing it, and we loved every second of it.

“It’s been ten years Ava, you need some closure sweetheart,” Matthew came over and kissed the top of my head. I couldn't help but smile. Matthew knew he was right.

“Well then, I guess I’ll be making a drive back to Vacaville,” I said, standing up and grabbing my car keys.

“Wait, you’re leaving now?” Matthew asked.

“Yeah!” I said, going through the place and walking out the front door.

“Wait a second Ava!” Matthew was all but running to catch me, and Max was on his heels.

I climbed into my car, shutting my door quickly. I stuck my head out the window; Matthew was standing in our font door with a dumbfounded look on his face.

“Just feed Max for me, I’ll be back soon!” I yelled out the window, driving off.

After a six hour drive and dealing with a bunch of shitty traffic, I was back in Vacaville. I remembered the street I grew up on like yesterday. Jacoby had grown up in the house right beside mine.
I pulled into his parents’ driveway and got out as quickly as possible.

I walked up on the porch and rang the doorbell, I was nervous. My hands were getting sweaty, and tingly. I wiped them on my jeans as someone answered the door.

“Hi, Ms. Roatch?” I asked, hoping she’d recognize me.

“Ava?!” She exclaimed, opening the door to give me a hug.

I wrapped my arms around her and hugged her back. Her house still smelled like cinnamon and applies, like it always had.

“How have you been dear? Come in, come!” She ushered me into the living room. I saw that ratty grey sofa she had when I was younger and would come over and hang out with Jacoby.

I laughed and sat down, “I’ve been fine, I guess. Living in the big city of Hollywood with a friend of mine. How have you been? How have the boys been?”

Colleen smiled, sitting down in the recliner across from me, “oh, they've been fine. Jacoby’s a rock star, Bryson's a photographer and Trevor’s a movie artist or something like that,”

“That’s great; I actually came here to talk to you about Jacoby,”

“Oh really, what for dear?”

“ I've been wondering, do you think you could give me his number or something? It’s just been a long time since I've talked to him; I guess I want to catch up,”

Colleen’s eyes lit up, “well Ava, you know I don’t mind honey,” she stood up and walked into the kitchen. I heard the drawer where she kept address books and pens open. I knew her house better than my own.

She walked back into the room and handed me a slip of paper.
“To be honest Ava, I’d much rather had Jacoby be with you, even with the age difference between you two. You guys just, clicked,”

I was pretty shocked once the words registered in my mind. She was his mother for crying out loud, you’d think she would be happy with whoever he married.

“Well, it’s been nice catching up with you,” I stood up, and walked over to her, hugging her again.

“You too sweetie, please come back soon!” Colleen exclaimed, squeezing me a bit harder than usual. She opened the front door for me.

“Of course!” I folded up the slip of paper and stuck it in my pocket and walked out.
