My World Turned Upside Down

Chapter One: What just happened?

Rockelle just exited the biology building on campus, when she looked up into the light blue sky. She was thinking about the words that her counsellor had said to her earlier that day, "You’re going to have to make a decision. This semester you have taken all the courses that we have available that might aide in your struggle. You're simply going to have to choose one path or the other. In one hand, you have the potential to make quite a bit of money, but the other career can be very rewarding. Here, take this book and read it. Hopefully it will help you make up your mind." he had just given her a book, one that she had barely taken the time to glance at yet. Rockelle shoved it into her backpack, her mind still spending more power on the decision ahead.
Someone bumped into her since she had stopped walking, nearly causing her to stumble. She looked up at them confused. The man just shot her an ugly stare, obviously blaming her for being in his way. Rockelle wrapped her long fingers around her backpack straps that were hanging off her shoulders, taking this opportunity to better adjust her backpack. She made a beeline to her dorm room. She had just taken her last final for the semester, and she noticed that people were already starting to move out of her dorms. This caused her to panic a little, for she was never ready to move back home for the summer. She looked around her room, realizing just how much she needed to pack up, but didn't feel like packing just yet. She knew it would have to be something she did eventually, but she normally packed up for the summer at the last possible moment, cherishing every moment she could away from home. Though she rarely ever talked about her home life, it was obvious to her friends that it was not the best environment for her.
Rockelle slipped her light backpack off her shoulders and gently placed it onto her desk. She less cautiously slid into the matching chair and slumped over the desk, her head in her hands. Her whole life she had known that she had wanted to help the world, but figuring out her role was the hardest. The two paths she had narrowed her career choices to were a doctor and a veterinarian. She knew she wanted to get a doctorate, the longer away from her father, the better. He had been helping her pay for her college, the other half she had gotten student loans for. So she was happy for his help, but that didn't change the way she felt.
Finally, tired of debating things in her mind, she slowly reached for her backpack, enjoying the soft mesh against her fingers. She unzipped the backpack, and reached for the book that she had been given. It was certainly an old book. Rockelle ran her fingers over the worn binding, and the ends of the pages, taking this opportunity to read the words on the cover. This book had been translated into English... She raised an eyebrow when she read that it was originally written in Japanese very long time ago, by a priestess. She couldn't help but wonder how this book would have any effect on her now. Kagome was her name, the priestess that originally wrote the book. Rockelle closed her eyes, and took a moment to listen to her other senses. In the background she could hear all sorts of music playing, and people packing up the dorms, overall being loud. Her nose caught the scent of something foreign and fragile, that she could not yet place her finger on. Her fingers were still feeling the texture of the book, which was slightly abrasive to her well lotioned hands. The pages themselves felt stiff and unweilding. She couldn't help but wonder who this Kagome could have been as she continued to clear her mind of all the thoughts that so frequently clouded her brain. Finally, Rockelle opened her eyes as she opened the cover and started reading.
Half an hour later, Rockelle was astounded. This priestess, Kagome, had been able to comprehend medical thoughts for both humans and animals way beyond her era. Her knowledge had been so revolutional, that they kept her book alive for so long. But there was a particular passage that made no sense.
"For as long as there is evil in the world, there must be someone to combat it. I came a long distance to aid the life of kikio. Will anyone come to my aide if there comes such a time? Will you be the one to save my soul?" As Rockelle read that line, she felt some sort of vibration in the very core of her being. That foreign, fragile scent became much more pronounced. She shook her head, and jumped up from her chair, thinking that she must be going crazy. She had just been spending all week preparing for finals, she could be a little crazy at the moment. She decided to take a shower, so she took her robe, and locked her bathroom doors, stripping herself in no time. She turned on the hot water, impatient to jump into the shower.
After her steamy shower, she stepped out onto the cold tile floor, wrapping her towel around her. Oh how she loved stepping out into a steam filled bathroom right after a hot shower. She started out by towel drying her hair, getting at least the dripping water out of it. She then carefully dried off her body, and applied lotion right away. She loved feeling like she was locking the moisture straight into her skin. She looked onto the bathroom counter, noticing the book. She instantly became alarmed. She threw her robe on half-hazardly. She could have sworn that she left the book on the desk. She checked the doors, and they were still locked. She looked back to the book with mild apprehension. So how did the book make it into her bathroom? She looked down into the pages, the words "Will you be the one to save my soul?" catching her attention right away. She felt that vibration again, along with some tactile wave emitting from the book. But for some reason, she was unable to look away. She felt like the book was pulling her in. It wasn't giving her the option. She could feel some sort of presence physically pulling her closer. She unlocked the door and ran into her room, grabbing onto her backpack, before feeling the strangest sensation. She felt like she was in some sort of tornado, and she was falling, falling fast. She temporarily blacked out after hitting something rather firm, like dirt. As much as she begged her mind for consciousness, she couldn't help but give into the darkness.
