Aiden

XV

“Aiden…that’s not supposed to be on your face.”
Lucien chuckled as he wiped the chocolate batter from my face.

We were baking brownies for New Years.
It doesn’t seem like much fun…but I’m glad that I’m with Lucien.

He smiled and kissed me on the cheek.

His smile was still beautiful, green eyes shining brightly again.
He was just as I first met him.

“What’s wrong, Aiden? Is there something on my face?”
I shook my head and smiled.

He gasped and it went away quickly.

I smiled…I actually smiled for a good reason…

“Aiden…I want you to smile again. Please…”
He moved closer to me and placed both of his hands on my cheeks.

I felt my chest tighten as his eyes stared into mine.

Ba-bump…ba-bump…ba-bump…

“Please…It’s so beautiful…and…I love when you’re happy, Aiden…”

Ba-bump. Ba-bump. Ba-bump.

I lost control.

Ba-bump ba-bump ba-bump ba-bump ba-bump.

I leant in and pressed my lips against his.

He didn’t move, but he didn’t push me away.
He just stood there, frozen like a statue.

I stopped and pulled away.
He had a pained look on his face.

The tight feeling in my chest was replaced by ache.

I brought my gaze to the floor and mumbled an apology.

I knew it.
How could he ever fall in love with a psychopath like me?

“Aiden…?”

I bit down on my lip to keep myself from saying anything, but I lost control of my body again.

“I…I love you, Lucien…”

I didn’t have to look at him.

The room was quiet, enough to hear the harsh beating of my heart.

I turned away from him and started to walk towards my room.
I was stopped when a hand gripped my wrist.

“D-Don’t…don’t walk away, Aiden…”

‘Walk away. It’s too late for him to say anything now.’

“Please, Aiden…I…I want to say it back…! B-but I can’t…I’m scared, Aiden. I’m scared…”

I turned back around to look at him.
Tears were rolling down his cheeks.

I didn’t want to make him cry…I didn’t want to make him cry…

I pulled him into a hug and petted his hair softly.

“What are you afraid of, Lucien…?”

He sniffled a bit and rested his head against my chest.

“I’m…I’m afraid…that I’ll get hurt again…”

My stomach twisted at the thought of Kyle.

The bruises and scars on Lucien’s skin.
Kyle’s body parts scattered around the room as his blood soaked my hands.

The sick, devious smile that formed on my face.

“I’m not like him…I won’t dare hurt you, Lucien…I promise.”
I tilted his head up so that he would look at me.

“I promise.”

I brushed my thumb against his cheek to wipe the tears away.

“Now, how about we finish baking those brownies?”
I managed to smile again, which brightened his mood up instantly.

Maybe…Maybe I can get used to smiling around him.
He’s worth every one.

‘You’re so pathetic.’

Ignore it.

‘You’ve think you got a happy ending. Well, you’re wrong as hell.’

Shut up.

‘Just watch. You’ll break your promise. You’ll fuckin’ break it.’

I tried to catch my breath as I clutched at my chest.

“Aiden? Are you okay?”
“Y-Yeah…I’ll be right back…!”

I rushed into the bathroom, quickly opening the cabinet, and grabbed the pills.
I popped two in my mouth and swallowed them dry.

Breathe in…breathe out…breathe in…breathe out…

Ba-bump. Ba-bump. Ba-bump. Ba-bump.

Ba-bump.

‘There’s no point in trying, Aiden. You can’t silence us anymore.’
