Aiden

IV

“Aiden…it’s your turn to speak.”

I lifted my head up, looking at the circle of people around me.

One by one, I pointed them out.

A recovering drug addict…a teenage alcoholic…a manic depressive model…a sadist college student…an anorexic pianist…and the adulterer, our psychiatrist…

They all continued to stare at me, waiting for an answer.

I didn’t say anything.

I’m fine…I’m fine…

‘They’re all judging you, Aiden…Look at how they’re staring at you…’

I just have to ignore them…I just have to ignore them…

‘The addict and the alcoholic think you’re cute…the model thinks you’re fat…’

Stop it…

‘The student wants to slit your throat…the pianist is afraid of you…’

Stop it!

‘Oh…and the psychiatrist wants to fuck you…’

“STOP IT!”

Everyone tensed up at my outburst. The psychiatrist sighed and adjusted his glasses.

“You’re all dismissed, except Aiden. I need to talk to you.”

I shrunk into my chair as I watched everyone else leave.

“It seems that you haven’t made much of a recovery, Aiden.”

The psychiatrist walked over and sat in the chair next to me.
I looked away from him.

I tensed up when I felt a hand on my thigh. He was closer and I could feel his breath on my neck.

“Are you taking your medication like you’re supposed to?”

“Please...get away from me…”
“Why? I’m only trying to help…”

He was rubbing my thigh now, his hand moving closer and closer…

“Don’t do this, doctor…”

He ignored me and kissed my neck.

“Don’t you miss being touched like this? Your girlfriend ‘disappearing’ and all…”

I pushed him off and quickly stood up, trying to catch my breath.
He adjusted his glasses again, then he stood up and walked over to his desk.

“Be sure to pick up your prescription refill, tomorrow. Also, you’ll be receiving a caretaker in about two days. It’s for your own good, Aiden.”

I only stood there, keeping my gaze on my worn out Converse.

I heard footsteps come closer and stop in front of me.
He slipped a piece of paper into the pocket of my jacket and placed a kiss on my forehead.

“Goodnight, Aiden. See you next Wednesday.”

I didn’t look at him. I quickly ran out the door and headed back home.

‘We told you, Aiden…we warned you. This is why you should listen to us…we were trying to protect you.’
