Try to Live

Like A Drum My Heart Never Stops Beating

"You're to good for him anyways, Alice," Lindsey sighed and avoided eye contact with the girl sitting across from her. "You're to nice. I mean, remember the first time I met you? I said exactly, 'you're dating him? But you are to nice to be with him'!"

Alice let a tear slip from her eye, but quickly wiped it away. "It doesn't feel like I'm better than him. He practically just tossed it in the air, like it had no meaning, like he didn't care." She now looked her friend in the eyes. "I was the one not giving him enough of whatever he wanted! It was all me. All me," she said the last part in hardly a whisper as tears just started flowing down her cheeks, leaving red streaks.

"He probably wasn't thinking. Anyways, you don't have a place to live, why don't you stay with me and Jon? There's plenty of room."

Alice shook her head, "no, Andrew's going to move out once I buy the place from him. I just have around a thousand dollars left until I have enough."

Lindsey's jaw dropped. "He's selling the place to you? Where's he going to live?"

"Apparently with Brandon Bollig." she shrugged. "We're just going to live together for maybe another month and a half then he'll be gone."

"How is that going to be any good?" Lindsey mumbled and looked down. "You know, maybe it could help you get him back! Dress all hot and we can go to clubs, and maybe even get a boyfriend-"

"Linds, I'm not going to play some stranger."

"That's fine! But trust me, the breakup will hit him and he'll realize he can't touch you," she smirked and Alice just laughed. She knew that Andrew always loved touching her, even if it was just hugs or having his arm around her.

"Well I'm going to get going. Maybe I can get home before him so it won't be awkward."

The two girls hugged each other goodbye. When Alice got back to the apartment, Andrew was fixing on his hat and grabbing a Gatorade that was left on the kitchen counter. As he looked at her, he gave her a small smile and a nod before quickly making his way out. Probably to Brandon's.

Alice couldn't come to think of what she did wrong in the relationship. She always took care of him, gave him all her attention, she never cheated or checked out other guys. In all honesty, she would call herself the perfect girlfriend.

As the movie played, and the world outside had darkened, Alice couldn't help but sigh and bury her head in her hands. It was already eleven and either Andrew was crashing at Brandon's or out at a club. I shouldn't be worried about this.

But Alice couldn't help get a little mad at the thought of him going to a club and picking up another woman just a couple days after the breakup. That was just rude, and it was even more disrespectful knowing that she was living with him for the next short while.

She pushed herself off the couch and made her way to the shower. Maybe the warm water would help her take away some of the stress. The shower helped her physical problems, but definitely not her mental problems. She was in her underwear -not even a bra- when the phone started ringing from the living room where she left it. Not thinking that anyone was going to show up, she walked to her cell phone and saw that it was an unknown number calling. She pressed ignore and turned around to walk back to her room.

The door flung open, causing Alice to gasp as Andrew walked through the door and stared at her intently. She quickly turned her back to him and grabbed a blanket off the couch to cover her chest.

"What are you doing naked in my apartment?" Andrew asked, and he sounded a little mad.

"I was taking a shower," Alice responded defensively. "My phone rang and I came out to get it."

"Oh. Well, um, I just went over to Brandon's and we went out."

"Of course," she whispered and sighed slightly. "Well can you go to your room so I can get back to mine?"

Andrew's deep eyes stared into hers, then roamed around the parts of her body he could see. This made Alice smirk a little bit.

He cleared his throat, "yeah... right."

Then he snapped his head to the hallway, and walked to his room.

That night Alice got hardly any sleep. She was restless at the thought of Andrew getting another girlfriend. Was that the reason he dumped me? Was there someone else? Sure, for the last month of their relationship he would check out other girls right in front of her, especially if they went to a club. One time Alice actually saw a stunning, yet slutty, woman sitting on the lap of her boyfriend. Andrew even saw her stare at them, but still smiled and flirted with the girl. It was like he wanted Alice to break up with him so he didn't have to do it.

Either way it would have gone, it still would've broke her heart. Some teammates like Patrick Kane or Brandon Saad, or even Jonathan Toews would come up to her and break the news that Andrew had been talking and flirting with another girl. Even though Alice knew it was true, she would just tell them they were crazy and try to go back to her so called happy relationship.

Finally at three in the morning she fell into sleep.

Something made a loud noise in the kitchen which made Alice wake up. She rubbed her eyes and went to the bathroom.

"Alice!" Patrick ran over to her and lifted her off her feet. "I haven't seen you in like a week. Where've you been?"

She laughed nervously and rubbed the back of her neck. "Just here. I've seen Lindsey a lot."

"No kidding," Jon laughed from his seat at the table. "I swear I haven't seen her all this week!"

Alice smiled weakly and poured a cup of orange juice for herself. She could feel Andrew's eyes on her as the shirt she was wearing rode up a bit when she reached up to grab a bowl for cereal.

"Well, we better be getting to practice," Jon said and scooted the chair back to get out.

"Oh great, time for the practice kiss," Kaner rolled his eyes, referring to when Alice would give Andrew a pre practice kiss before he left.

A nervous smile found a way onto her face. "Uh... I don't think there's going to be a kiss today."

"Why?" He pressed.

Obviously Andrew didn't tell his teammates about it. "I'm actually feeling a little sick. I don't want to get him sick."

A look of terror crossed on Patrick's face. "I touched you! I'm going to get sick, get out of here!"

And out he ran.

Jon walked out too, but Andrew stayed behind for a second to thank her. "I promise I'll tell the guys after practice."

Alice just rolled her eyes and went to her room to get ready for work. She worked at a dentist office being a receptionist, hey it paid the bills. After she was done taking her college classes online she was going to find a job being a teacher for either older elementary students or in middle school. And if she taught in middle school she preferred science.

Once dressed in the scrubs she drove to the office. Bella, who works there as well, was already at the desk and typing away at something. Alice saw it was only Facebook she was on when she got behind the desk. Her sour face as she logged into the computer told Bella something was up.

"What's up butter cup?" Even though Bella was a could years older than her, she acted like she was actually a couple years younger than her.

Alice sighed, "Andrew."

"Oh great, what did the bitch do now?"

She couldn't help but laugh a little bit at her pet name for him. She was a die hard Canucks fan and definitely was not fond of him. "He didn't tell his teammates that we broke up."

"Seriously? But you're like best friends with them though!"

Alice scanned through the appointments there was today. Then popped one of the mints they have out in her mouth before answering. "I honestly don't know. He knows that I see them a lot, and most times when I'm with him."

The door chimed and someone walked in. The two girls gave their best smile to the man as they checked him in.

"So what's going on with you and Alice?" Patrick basically yelled from across the locker room after practice, which caused the guys to stop what they were doing and look at him.

"What do you mean?"

"You two weren't all affectionate like you are every morning with each other. I don't even think you looked at each other."

"Yeah, and the other night you got this puck bunny's number," Brent Seabrook decided to add to it.

Andrew looked uneasy for a second, but then regained his posture. "I was meaning to tell you guys about that. We broke up."

Guys' shocked expressions were the only thing that he could look at. He knew it was kind of surprising news to the boys, but he didn't think they would stay like that for five minutes.

Questions fired at him. Mostly they were why he did, some were who, and then some were just about where she was now and how she was taking it.

"Things just weren't working out, I broke it off, and..." he trailed off, not really knowing how she had been taking it. The first day she didn't come out of the room at all, but then the next she looked fine.

"Now why would have you done that? Your relationship was honestly perfect. She did everything for you man," Corey Crawford stated.

Again, Andrew honestly doesn't know why he had. The easiest answer is saying it just wasn't working out, but if you asked him specifically why, like Crow did, he had no clue.

"So is she free game?" Someone threw their shin pad at Patrick but he just gave them his boyish grin. "I mean, she's single. Hey Shawzy, don't give me that look."

Andrew glared at the forward. Alice would never go out with Patrick Kane.

"You don't want her, why can't I?"

"I never said I didn't want her."

"Well, you have a funny way of showing it my friend," Patrick Sharp slapped him on the shoulder. "Just saying, breaking up with her means you don't want her."

Andrew couldn't take the stares from his teammates and ran out of the locker room.
