Wake Up & See The Sky

Chapter Three

As soon as Kellin heard the front door slam shut he jerked out of bed, trying to be mindful of the bruises littering his body as he ran into the bathroom across the hall. He didn’t waste any time turning the shower on and yanking his clothes off before jumping into the shower. The water hadn’t had time to adjust and he hissed when the icy water hit his chest. He didn’t have time to be gentle so set to work on scrubbing his body and washing his hair.
His internal clock told him that he had been in the shower for long enough so he rinsed himself off and hopped out, wrapping a towel around his waist. He would have just continued on to his room, knowing that he was going to be late again if he got side tracked, but that thought went out the window when he saw his reflection in the mirror on the wall. He was thin to begin with, but he seemed to have gotten skinnier, his hipbones more prominent and you could almost see the outline of his ribs. Dark blue and purple splotches covered his chest and stomach with the occasional one on his leg or arm and he already knew that he would need a miracle to cover some of them up.
Tearing his eyes away he made his way to his room, walking much slower than before. Had he always looked that bad? He could have sworn he wasn’t that small but then again, he thought to himself, his dad had been in a bad mood for quite a while now. He bit his lip in concentration, and as he dug through his closet he tried not to dwell on the topic. It was bad enough that his father was such a violent person anyway; he really didn’t want to think about the abuse getting worse.
He knew that Matty had said what he went through was illegal, that a dom couldn’t hurt a fertile, but he couldn’t help but feel as if that was complete bullshit. Even if they had proof, which he was covered in, and if his dad confessed, which he would never do, his father was smart. He would come up with some elaborate excuse that everyone would believe and he would be back at square one.
Pushing those thoughts out of his head finished getting dressed, picking a long sleeve shirt despite the sun shining outside and some dark jeans that he decided against rolling up. Running downstairs he narrowly missed hip checking the table at the landing before grabbing his bag and hurrying outside. He could feel the hunger gnawing at his insides-he hadn’t eaten a real meal in a while- but he knew that being a fertile he could survive without blood or real food much longer than others. He was used to it anyway.
As soon as he turned the corner and saw the school he could feel an overbearing sense of dread, and he knew why as soon as he started walking up the steps. There were hundreds of kids still outside waiting and as soon as he got up that last step all eyes seemed to be on him. But he didn’t have to worry as much as soon as he saw the familiar red head running towards him, holding his glasses on his face and his bag slapping his back with every step.
“Kellin!” He called, coming to a halt in front of the younger boy only to grab his wrist and start to pull him back to the school. “I need to talk to you. I don’t know what the hell you did but everyone’s talking about you. Second say and there are already rumors about you.” His soft voice said as he pulled Kellin through the front doors. Before he could protest Matty stopped in a somewhat empty hallway and he turned to his friend. “Spill, how did you do it?”
“How did I do what?” Kellin was pretty sure his head was about to explode from confusion if Matty didn’t get straight to the point. But luckily his skull would stay intact as Matty continued on, placing his hands on his hips in a rather feminine pose.
“How did you get the most feared and badass dom’s attention in just one day? You didn’t even talk to anyone!” He said exasperated as he tossed his hands up in the air. He didn’t let him respond as he plowed forward. “This isn’t good Kellin. While they can’t physically hurt you, they can still ruin your life and your dad’s career.”
At that Kellin’s breath hitched, his eyes wide and his mind whirling at what seemed like a million miles an hour. Ruin his dad’s career? “What do you mean?” He asked, his voice coming out higher than he intended.
“I mean, that they can get your dad off of the human/vampire council. And I don’t know what your situation with him is, but I can tell that that wouldn’t be very good.” Matty said, trying to calm Kellin down. “So…I have a plan.” Kellin quickly motioned for him to go on, checking around them to see if anyone was listening in on their conversation. “You need to keep your head down. Don’t talk to too many people, not that it looks like that would be too hard.” He said joking, nudging his friend. “ I’ve only know you for not even a full 24 hours but I’m going to help you Kellin.”
“Thank you Matty.” He said sincerely, grabbing Matty’s hands. “ I’ve never really had friends before, but I really, really appreciate it.”
‘No problem! I just hope that when the time comes you’ll help me out too.” He said with a wink. “Now come on, we’ve got class, and you look like you need to sit down.”
Kellin nodded and they headed to their first class, Creative Writing with Patrick, but he couldn’t help but think back to what Matty had said. Ruin his father’s career? Kick him off the council? He hoped to whatever god was out there that that wouldn’t happen. Because if that happened, his dad would never leave the house…And there was a never a moment where Kellin enjoyed his company.
