The World and Us

Sleep

The dead trees start to wizz past me as we pick up speed. Our world used to have this global warming problem. It got really bad at one point but we fixed it eventually. More animals have become extinct though. You wouldn't find a polar bear anywhere. They were wiped out when I was ten. No more giant pandas. They were extinct before I was born. But there are still some left.
A red kite flies past the window, hovering along side the car. I wonder if he knows where we're going. There are only eight hundred humans left. Eight hundred thousand I mean.
The sun starts to peer over the red clouds. 'Red sky in the morning, shepards warning,' runs through my head, but I brush it aside. I have to get on that ship and find out why we're leaving this planet. I have to stifle a yawn as I think. Thinking makes me sleepy.
" How much longer do we have left?" I ask mum, wondering if I could fit in a sleep.
"About two hours," she mutters. Her head lolling to the side. I start to drift off as I think more. Eventually, I give in to sleeps grasp.
