A Rose by the Shore

Lincoln looked out at the rocking ocean, breathing in the salty air as he gripped the gritty sand between his fingers. I saw him release his clasp and brushed his hand on his khaki shorts as he let out a deep sigh. He sneaked a glance at me at the corner of his eyes and I quickly turned away, trying to act nonchalant. I silently watched the deafening waves crash against the rocks in front of us. The rocks were stacked jaggedly dangerous on top of each other and I couldn't help but still find them beautiful.

"You know, you're like a rose by the shore,” he said suddenly.

I furrowed my eyebrows and looked at the man sitting beside me. "A rose by the shore? That doesn't make any sense,” I scoffed.

Lincoln leaned back onto his elbows that propped him up, ”of course it does."

Perking my interest, I turned my whole body towards the twenty-five-year-old, engaging in what he had to say, ”a rose growing by the shore is impossible and if it isn't, then it’s certainly rare.”

He smirked, “exactly.”
