Crashing the Crease

It's Not Me, It's You

Charlie laid still next to Justin, sheets covering her naked body as she stared over at him for a few minutes while he slept. Why don’t I feel anything? She thought. She had been with him for over two years now. She thought she’d be in love with him but she was sure she wasn’t. And if she was, she was impressed with this thing called love.

The next morning she wandered out to the kitchen and put on some music while she prepared breakfast for the two, hoping to have a nice time with him. Amy sat on the couch, catching up on a few shows she had missed during the week.

Justin exited Charlie’s room, completely dressed in the clothes he wore the night before. He gave Charlie a half smile as he entered the kitchen.

Looking up at him with a smile, it soon dissipated as she realized he was leaving. She rolled her eyes and immediately stopped cooking. “I’m sorry, I just got called in.” He apologized.

“You’re the one that complains about us not spending time together but you’re the one with your head stuck so far up your boss’s fucking ass.” Charlie complained, trying not to raise her voice.

Justin cleared his throat, glancing over at Amy, who had now muted the television as she was listening in on their conversation. “Are you done?” He asked quietly, hoping he didn’t make her more upset.

“No.” She quickly stated. “I’m fucking tired of being blamed for us not spending time together. You’re the one that doesn’t put in the effort, not me, Justin.”

“Charlie, you know how bad I want that partnership. You knew this when we started dating. I would never hold you back from what you wanted.”

“Hold you back? That’s what you think I’m doing?” She asked seriously, looking at him dead in the eyes.

Just as Justin was about to speak, his phone began ringing. He watched Charlie challenge him with the sudden glare on her face, daring him to answer it. He knew she was going to be pissed if he answered, but that didn’t matter to him at the moment. “Sir?” He answered, Charlie shaking her head and rolling her eyes as she left the kitchen. “Yeah, I’ll be right in.” He informed his boss as he watched her lean up against the couch.

He hung up his phone and grabbed his jacket of the table. “We’ll talk later.” He told Charlie as she looked over at him, obviously not happy.

“Yes, sir.” She said sarcastically, saluting him with her hand as he walked out the door.

The door closed and Charlie let out a loud, frustrated groan as she fell back onto the catch, her head landing in Amy’s lap. “He’s such a dick.” She said, looking at her friend.

“Charmandor, can I ask you a serious question?” Charlie looked at Amy with worried eyes before nodding her head in reply. Amy searched for the right words to use but she went the most logical question. “Are you even in love with the guy?” She asked.

Charlie stayed quiet for a few seconds before she answered her. “I don’t know. Sometimes I think I am, but I don’t get the butterflies or anything like what your’s and Zack’s relationship.” Amy sighed. She wanted Charlie to be with someone that was worth her while, Justin just wasn’t that guy.

“Does anybody give you butterflies?” She asked out of curiosity. Daniel immediately entered Charlie’s brain after she asked that. He was the only guy that gave her butterflies. His voice was enough to give her goose bumps.

Removing those thoughts quickly from her head, she answered Amy. “No.” She said falsely, hoping Amy would buy it.

“We’ll have to work on that.” Amy said with a smile, earning one from Charlie as well.

Charlie walked the halls of Honda Center, taking a seat on the Ducks bench to watch the guys’ morning skate before their game against the Kings.

Justin sent her constant texts as she tried to evaluate the players and decide on who she was going to interview before the game. “Leave me the fuck alone.” She said quietly to her phone, shutting it off and stuffing it into her jacket pocket.

Dan let out a chuckle as he stood a few feet from Charlie, getting a drink from the bench. She looked over to the source of laughter and gave an innocent smile. “Sorry.”

“You alright?” He asked sincerely.

“Yeah, I’m fine.” She assured him, giving him a warm smile. She wasn’t fine. She was pretty unsure of how she was at the moment, but it wasn’t fine, that she was positive about. “Go practice, you need it.” She said jokingly. Dan laughed at her before skating along the ice.

Dan knew something was off with her. He had only known her for a little over a week but she was easy to read when he saw her.

“What’s wrong, Charlie Bear?” Ryan asked, sitting on the bench beside Charlie.

“Nothing, Getzy. Don’t worry about it.” She said. Ryan looked at her, locking their eyes together.

“How long have I known you? Three years now? Yeah, I know when you’re full of shit, excuse the expression.” Charlie showed no emotion towards Ryan’s assumptions. “Now, are you going to tell me what’s wrong? Did Justin do something?” When Charlie’s eyes went weak, he knew. “What did the idiot do now?”

“He’s an asshole, that pretty much explains everything.” She responded.

“Need me to kick his ass?” He asked with a smile on his face, but it was a pretty serious question.

“Thanks, Getzy but I think I’ll take care of this myself.” She said, smiling at him. Ryan laughed and stood from the bench, jumping over the wall.

“I’m here if you need me.” He said, giving her a wink before skating back onto the ice.

Charlie definitely felt better after talking to Getzy, he had that charm that you couldn’t deny.

Her eyes drifted down the ice, landing on Dan. He shot pucks into the goal, making a decent amount of them while Fasth was blocking shots from a few players as well.

She didn’t know what it was about him but it worried her with the way he made her feel.
