Lincecum

CHAPTER III: Not So Tiny Bites

When we got there, the host sat us immediately at a booth right at the back of the restaurant.

‘Your waiter will be with you right away.’ The host said as she handed us the menus and left our table
‘Have you been here before?’ Tim asked me, while I was looking around the place, which had garlic hung around
‘Just once, like years ago, but I was sick so I couldn't eat anything.’ I answered looking at him
‘Well I hope you like the food, it's really good’ Tim said, I responded with a smile before looking down at the menu again ‘So did you ever hear back from FIDM?’ he asked
‘Yeah, I got in.’ I said excited ‘Lily, my best friend and I moved into the city like two weeks ago.’
‘Wow, congratulations Isa! So where are you guys living?’ he asked me while drifting his eyes through the menu
‘At the infamous Infinity, you know the one on Folsom.’ I said looking up from the menu I was examining as well
‘Yeah I know, is it pretty up there?’ he asked trying his hardest to keep the conversation going, which made me crack a smile
‘Gorgeous.’ I said ‘Our apartment is on the top floor and has an amazing view of the city, you have to come and see it sometime.’ I continued.
‘I take the invitation,’ he said ‘I'd love to. And how come you live in such an expensive building if this is the first time you move out?’ Tim asked
‘Well, first of all my dad had the idea, and he's friends with the building owner, so he got us a discount and Lily's dad and mine paid for a little bit more than half of it, and the rest was on Lily and I.’ I answered ‘So, where do you live Lincecum? I asked him while leaning on the table a bit
‘Sausalito, I rent a house there, it has a pretty damn view as well.’ I just nodded and waited for around five seconds until I spoke
‘So you're not gonna invite me to see it?’ I asked ‘Ok, I get it.’ I said trying to act offended
‘I didn't think I had to say it, I thought it was an understatement, because you're absolutely welcome in my house.’ Tim told me, I just rolled my eyes
‘Nice save Timothy, nice save.’ I said leaning back against my seat, he was sighing in relief when the waiter came to our table
‘I'm sorry to interrupt, my name is Jorge and I'm going to be your waiter tonight, would you like anything to drink?’ the waiter asked, Tim looked at me, so I spoke first
‘I'll have a lemonade, please.’ I said looking at Jorge
‘I'll just have a diet coke, please.’ Tim said to the waiter
‘Are you guys ready to order?’ he said looking at the closed menus on the table. Tim and I looked at each other for a second before he answered
‘I think I'm ready what about you?’ Tim asked me
‘Yeah me too.’ I said smiling
‘Ok then ma'am what can I get for you?’ Jorge asked me
‘I'll have the fresh tomatoes pasta, please.’ I answered while handing him the menu
‘And for you sir?’ Jorge asked Tim, as he scribbled my order down
‘I'll have the crab with prime rib.’ he said handing the menu to Jorge ‘Thank you.’
‘It'll be right out.’ Jorge told us as he walked away
‘He is totally from Yucatán.’ I said thinking out loud, as I watched our waiter talk to the host in Spanish
  ‘Where?’ Tim asked me confused
‘Yucatán, it's a state in México,’ I answered ‘the one on top of the state where Cancún is.’
‘And how do you know?’ Tim said with a challenging face
‘Because I used to live there.’ I responded with a weird face as well
‘Really?’ Tim asked continuing to make weird face, and I couldn't help it anymore and laughed
  ‘Yes, really.’ I said smiling
‘How long did you live there?’ he asked
‘Like 3 years, I was 16 and a half when we left.’ I said remembering the days in México
‘Do you miss it?’ he asked with a serious face
‘I miss the place, and my friends; just not the weather, we were like a hundred degrees daily, it was hell on earth.’ I answered, fanning myself with my hand dramatically, making Tim smile a little
‘You had friends?!’ Tim said acting surprised and laughing
‘Hey!’ I said punching him lightly ‘I bet I had more friends than you.’ I told him laughing
‘I doubt that, back in junior high I was Mr. Popular, I was 5'2, weighing like 90 pounds, yeah everybody loved me.’ Tim said with a grin on his face causing me to burst out laughing ‘Enough about my socializing skills, where you close to them? I mean your friends, of course.’
‘We were like sisters, honestly, when we were starting high school, people started calling us “Besties” and the name stuck, we did everything together, like if we were going to a party, we would all go to someone's house to get ready, we used to do trips together, PJ parties, I really miss them a lot.’ I shared, showing a little bit of sadness
‘Do you see them a lot?’ he asked with the most compassionate face he could give
‘Vacations and holidays mostly, but this time with the move and everything, I barely had time to breathe.’
‘So how many Besties are there?’ he asked
‘At first we were 10, then it went up to 11, then 14, 16 and right down the remaining 13; we're quite the crowd.’ I told him as he looked at me with a shocked face
‘Ok, you officially took my popular spot.’ he said, making me laugh yet again
‘And that's if, you don't count the boys, that's just us girls.’ I said laughing
‘Yeah, I'm not gonna ask you about that, you might take my second place spot in the popular list as well.’ he said joining me with the laughs. Before any of us could say anything, Jorge came back with the food and drinks
‘I'm sorry to interrupt again, but I bring the goods, fresh tomatoes and a lemonade for the lady;’ he said as he handed me the food - and crab and prime rib and a diet coke for you sir, anything else I can help you with?’
‘Yes, can I ask you a question Jorge?’ I said a little shyly
‘Yes miss, what is that?’ he asked
‘Are you from Yucatán? I may have overheard you talking to your coworker right there.’ I said a little worried about what his answer would be
‘Yes, señorita, as a matter of fact I am, are you from there as well?’ Jorge asked her happily
‘Not from there, but I lived there a good 3 or 4 years, gorgeous place right?’ I said taking a sip of her lemonade
‘Precious Miss, I miss it, just not during May, I'm happy to be here wearing a coat rather than melting back there.’ the waiter said smiling making me laugh with his comment
‘I know huh, pretty hot weather down there.’ I said returning the smile
‘Well, I'll leave you to continue your dinner, it was nice meeting you miss...’ he stopped as he looked at me, as in waiting for an answer
‘Fairchild, but Isabella's just fine.’ I said as I shook Jorge's hand
‘Mr. Lincecum,’ Jorge said now directing his hand to Tim ‘nice meeting you as well, keep up to good work, we need another championship here in the city.’
‘And we're doing our best to make that happen, I can assure you.’ he said shaking his hand and smiling ‘Nice meeting you as well Jorge.’

Jorge left the table and just seconds afterwards we both started eating, after around 2  or 3 minutes of silence, Tim decided to ask me about my engagement.

‘So Isa, how's your fiancée dealing with your move to the bay? Or is he moving out with you?’ he asked nervously as he looked up to me
‘There's no fiancée anymore.’ I answered as I showed him my empty left hand and half smiled
‘Oh, I'm sorry.’ Tim said looking a little uncomfortable
‘Don't worry about it.’ I told him ‘I mean it happens, it's no big deal.’
  ‘So, what happened?’ he continued
‘We just were on a different page, you know? Neither of us was willing to sacrifice our careers for each other, so we decided it was better to just break it off.’ I said ‘Anyways, enough about me, what about you Tim? Any fiancée your giving your career up for?’ I asked him as I tried to lighten the mood
‘Not really.’ he said, scratching the back of his neck ‘There used to be one, her name was Ruth, but she broke up with me like 6 months ago.’
‘Oh, sorry to hear that.’ I said ‘But you know, at the end of the day, I think everything happens for a reason and in the end it all works out for the best.’
‘Yeah, I guess you're probably right.’ Tim admitted with a slightly sad face, so I decided to try and lighten him up
‘Of course I'm right Lincecum! I'm always right.’ trying to get a laugh out of him, though all I could get was a smile. He was about to say something when Jorge interrupted him.
‘Excuse me, can I take away your plates?’ he asked kindly. I nodded and so did Tim. ‘Do you guys want anything else? We have some desserts if you'd like.’ Jorge offered, Tim looked at me and raised his eyebrows, silently asking me if I wanted the before mentioned dessert
‘I'm fine, thank you.’ I said looking at both Tim and Jorge
‘Me too, Jorge, thank you, but I will take the check, please.’ Tim told our waiter as he handed him his credit card, giving me no chance to fight for the bill
‘I'll be right back with it Mr. Lincecum.’ he answered as he parted from our table. I looked at Tim smiling covering half of the mentioned smile with my hand
‘You shouldn't have done that.’ I said shaking my head slightly looking at him then to the empty seat besides him
‘Shouldn't have done what?’ he asked, clearly oblivious to my question
‘I mean the bill, silly.’ I continued with my right hand covering half of my lips and raising my eyebrows
‘Oh come on! It's not like I'm letting you pay.’ he said throwing himself backwards and raising his hands a bit, then he leaned on the table and said ‘I would totally have my man card revoked if we split the bill.’ I chuckled
‘Thanks, Ace.’ I replied letting myself fall lightly on my side of the booth.
