A Dog's Life

Sixteen

Sarah collapsed onto the sofa and kicked her boots off. She was not moving for the rest of her life, scratch that she might possibly move to order food and grab a bottle of wine, after that she was never moving.

Work had nearly killed her off, she forgot what it was like to do a full days shift at the dress shop. She’d forgotten what the bridezillas, perfectionists mother of the brides and demanding brides maids were like. She’d also forgotten how emotional people got when they found the dress, she forgot how happy her job made her when she got to show people their custom designs. It had been a rollercoaster of emotions today, one that when it stopped sent you crashing back into your seat with such force you thought every bone in your body was broken. That was the feeling coursing through her right now, achy, tied but still with a little bit of adrenalin.

Spike had already been walked and thoroughly enjoyed himself. Sarah, however, had burned off every last calorie in her body. She’d already decided she was having a horrific, yet satisfying, take away pizza.

She’d been sat on the sofa a whole five minutes before her phone went off. The temptation to fling the phone across the room was most defiantly there. She didn’t even want to check the caller ID, whoever it was had picked a bad time.

“Hello?”

“Hey beautiful,”

All hate, anger and violent intentions melted from her body, as she physically relaxed into the sofa a smile crossing her lips.

“Hi,”

“You going to come and let me in?”

“What?”

“Let me in,” Zack chuckled. “I have something for you,”

“I’ll be right down,” All the problems disappeared and the energy to let her boyfriend in the flat magically formed in her body. She was so glad it did because as soon as she opened the front door, at the bottom of the block of flats, she wanted to scream in excitement.

There stood the most perfect site, Zacky Baker in tight jeans, t-shirt and loose unbuttoned shirt. His hair slicked back, piercings glinting and the faint shadow of stubble around his chin. In one hand was a bunch of dark red roses, while the other held a brown bag.

“Hey beautiful,” He smirked walking towards Sarah.

“That was going to be my line,” She pouted back, before kissing him softly on the lips. Zack pulled away first and presented the flowers.

“More kissing upstairs,” He smirked. “These are for that lovely lady,” Sarah’s smile grew as she took the beautiful bunch. “And this,” He held up the brown bag. “Is dinner Zacky Vee style,”

“Oo how exciting,” Sarah smiled turning round and leading him into the flat. One hand found it’s way to Sarah’s pulling her closer.

“You okay? How was being back at work?”

“Ah tiring,” Sarah admitted. “I literally plan on spending the evening on the sofa!”

“Well thank fuck I’m in charge of dinner,” He smirked kissing her again before she went to unlock the apartment door. “It would be nice to have a night in with you,”

“That is not very rockstar like!” Sarah chuckled letting him in and wondering through to the living room. His hand slipped around her waist and pulled her back into his body.

“I don’t want to be a rock star tonight baby,” She bit down on her lip noticing the intensity of his look, those vivid green eyes focused solely on her, as she turned in his grip. “I want to be your boyfriend,” He kissed her hard this time, making sure she was aware of all his emotions right now. “I fucked up before, I’d been Zacky V with every other girl I met, that shit doesn’t work!” Sarah cupped his face brushing her thumb across the appearing stubble. Softly bringing their lips together she felt her whole stomach flip, she hadn’t felt like this in a very long time and it was something so wonderful and beautiful.

“Mhmm,” Zacky pulled away a dangerous smirk and glint of playfulness in his eyes. “Now doll, I want you to get comfy, find us some movies and pour out the wine,”

“While you?”

“Whip up a storm in the kitchen!” He handed her the wine, kissing her nose softly and shooting her a wink. Sarah watched him walk into the kitchen, peeking over to see if she could spy what they were having for dinner. She couldn’t stop the shit-eating grin that was spreading over her face.

Sarah crashed out on the sofa while Zacky seemed to bustle around the kitchen, she wasn’t sure if he knew what he was doing or not! Every so often his phone would go off and he’d glare at it, or swear or just huff. She swore that every time he seemed a little angrier.

After a while the phone stopped and Zacky relaxed. Dinner was nearly ready and the incredible smells from the kitchen had Sarah’s mouth watering. She spied steak already and was amazed that Zack had the ability to cook. He’d never shown an ounce of interest in cooking, food yes, but not the cooking of it. They’d eaten take out, Sarah had prepared a few quick meals, and they’d gone out for food. Zacky cooking was new!

“How we doing ducky?” Sarah appeared the other side of the breakfast bar and slipped onto the stool. Zacky turned a bottle of wine in hand and poured Sarah another glass. “Are you trying to get me drunk?”

“Oh yes,” Zacky chuckled. “You’ll like the food better!”

“Oh,” Sarah giggled taking a sip and looking around the kitchen. “And when exactly will this food be ready?”

“Now beautiful,” Zacky turned again to start dishing up food. Sarah watched as homemade chips, steak and green vegetables were placed on her plate. Zacky poured over a sauce. “This is for you!”
Sarah couldn’t help but groan, her hunger suddenly making itself very well known.

“Zacky this looks incredible thank you-“

“Shh and get eating I am fucking starving!” She couldn’t help but laugh. The pair fell into quiet chatter as they enjoyed dinner. Spike appeared halfway through the meal looking hopeful for any left overs.

“This is so much better than the pizza I’d planned on ordering tonight! Can I get your take away number on speed dial?” Sarah smirked as she finished the last bite of her steak.

“Well I don’t give it out to just anyone!” Zacky chucked, finishing off the last of his dinner and taking another sip of wine. “But for you,” Sarah smiled back biting into a chip as Zacky continued to talk. “I would give you anything,” The serious tone he took made Sarah look up, his eyes were piercing and his lips parted ever so slightly. She couldn’t help but glance at them, remembering every little bit of pleasure they had given her.

God what that man could do.

“Now how about you go get yourself comfortable on that sofa, leave all this to me, and we can watch something you like,” He leaned over and kissed her softly. Sarah nodded slipping off her chair and walking towards Zacky, his arms twisted around her waist and he pulled her onto his lap. “I promise not to get moody if you pay more attention to the film than me,” He added as she opened her mouth to protest. “I want tonight to be about you, because you deserve it,” Sarah raised her eyebrows.

“Mr Baker you are sucking up to me a lot tonight?” He shrugged as his finger tips slipped up the back of her neck.

“I missed you this week, I had a lot of shit going on, you’ve gone back to work,” He leant closer to nuzzel her neck. “That’s all,” Sarah giggled as he found a ticklish spot. “So beautiful go get comfortable,” He gave her another quick peck before pushing her towards the sofa. “I’ll bring the wine,”

Zack kept true to his promise, letting her pick the film and for a while not getting moody when she got wrapped up in the plot line.

That didn’t mean he didn’t try to distract her to the point she had to pause the movie halfway through. Zack had just ignored her laughter and shouts as he’d pinned her down on the sofa trying to get both their clothes off as quickly as possible.

“You can’t be angry at me for that,” Zacky whispered as Sarah came back into the room, now wearing his t-shirt and a pair of her own shorts. “You are fucking irresistible,” He smirked, looking so youthful with a smile on his face and cheeky glint in his eyes.

Sarah collapsed onto the sofa next to him, turning round to stretch out, so her legs went over him.

She pulled the blanket over her both of them and relaxed against the sofa.

“This is perfect, tonight has been perfect,” Zacky looked over and smiled at her, putting his feet up on the coffee table and grabbing his phone.

“I agree, thank you sweetheart,” Sarah just smiled back, letting his hands softly rub against her bare legs as the movie started up again.
Perfect.

Zacky watched Sarah more than he watched the movie, she tried her hardest but he saw her eyes flickering shut eveyr so often. His phone kept disturbing him, the same message appeared.

I want it back

He finally gave in when a message from Brian appeared. He deleted the others and replied to Brian’s message.

“What ya up to?” Sarah questioned from her position stretched out on him, one hand was wrapped around her while the other clutched his mobile.

“Just sorting some shit out,” He muttered. Sarah noted how vague he was; he wasn’t focused on the TV or her, but whatever was on that phone. Sarah chose to ignore him, letting her eyes flicker shut again, just listening to the characters interact.

The bang of something startled Sarah out of her doze, her whole body shook with shock.

“Sorry baby,” She felt Zacky’s hands rubbing her bare arms. “Sorry, I dropped my phone,” He muttered pressing gentle kisses against her hair. “I didn’t mean to wake you,” Sarah grunted in response, pulling her body up to lean closer to Zack.

“I dozed off?”

“Yah huh darling,” Another kiss. “Maybe it’s time for bed,”

“Yeah,” She mumbled back, trying to snuggle up closer to Zacky who chuckled softly. He rested his nose against her soft hair, breathing in the scent of berries and vanilla that seemed to mix softly to make a beautiful scent that was all Sarah. He loved being close enough to just enjoy that smell. It was something intimate that made him realise just how close they were becoming.

He looked at his phone typing out his last text. He had made his decision.

Don’t bother. I don’t have it

He dropped the phone on to the floor softly and pulled Sarah closer.

“I love you,” He whispered quietly.

She wasn’t awake to hear it.
