YOU ROCK the ROCK

“Mommy, Mommy!” Five-year old Jessica hollers waddling into the den.

Her mother is curled up relaxing in the navy blue recliner reading a novel. She looks up from her book and sees her daughter excitedly bouncing up and down at the foot of the recliner. “What is it Jessica?” her mother questions setting her book aside and heaving her daughter up onto her lap.

“Mommy, do you want to know something?” Jessica says excitedly as she lies across her mother wiggling her body to get comfortable and stares up into her mother’s eyes.

“Absolutely. What is it you want to tell me?” the mother asks as she butterfly kisses her child.

“Well,” the five-year old begins, “I figured out why you say ‘you rock’ to me all the time.” Jessica speaks intelligently with one finger in the air as if to make a point; then takes her lifted finger and pokes her mom on the nose and grins.

“Why do I say that so much darling?” the mother asks faux curiously, only wanting to stimulate her daughter’s speaking and comprehension skills.

“OK. Once a long time ago there was a town of rocks. And in this town of rocks there was one rock that was really, really cool, cooler than any other rock in the town. But you see Mommy, this really, really cool rock had a name that was very long and very hard to say. His name was Walter-Rock-Allen-Poppy-Carson-Jay-Bob-Rockystein and nobody in the whole town could remember his name, not even his parents! But everyone in town knew who he was because he was so cool. So one day his parents were tired of not remembering his name and started calling him You Rock. And then the word got out that that was his new name, and everyone started calling him You Rock. The end!” Jessica triumphantly finished smiling at her mom.

Her mother looks at Jessica with confusion, her brow is crocked and she has a slight wicked smile on her face. “Jessica I’m a little bit confused, why was he renamed You Rock?”

“Because his name was so long and he was so different than all the other rocks, one rock would say You Rock and everyone would know they were talking about.” Jessica repeats again feeling annoyed that her mother did not listen to the story.

“Alright, now answer me this, what made You Rock so cool?” her mother smiles and tickles her slightly.

“Um…” Jessica giggles then hesitates as she pulls on her hair. “You Rock was really nice and he loved his friends and his mommy and daddy and he helped others every day. Just like you Mommy.” Jessica smiles hugging her mother tightly. “You Rock Mommy!”

“You Rock too Jessica,” her mother says as she lovingly hugs back and smacks a big kiss on her daughter’s cheek.
