Send Me Your Amnesty

Part Three: The In Between Years (Chapter 10)

December 2008 Dear Billie Joe,
YES IT’S AMAZING! I’m so happy to have Bush out of office! It’s truly a remarkable election.
So Amnesty went to her first formal dance. It was her school’s annual Snowflake Shake and she went with a bunch of her friends, which I think is better than going with a boy. (Amnesty isn’t really a girly girl. She was a tomboy growing up. Actually she goes through fashion stages; I remember in 1st grade (she was still at her private school) she wore a dress every day. Then she started playing all these sports and she became a tomboy. It was just this school year when she asked me if she could start wearing makeup. I showed her how to apply eye shadow. And plus this year she was on the volleyball team and it was team policy to dress up for game days. She started wearing skirts and putting on makeup.) My little girl is growing up! It was a little sad watching her go off to a formal dance. Next year she’ll be in high school. Homecoming, the winter formal, prom… Oh, her senior year will be here before you know it and she will have met you! Time cannot go any faster! ~Felicity

June 2009 Dear Billie Joe,
21 Century Breakdown is a big hit. It’s personally one of my favorite albums. I love the title song, and “The Static Age.” Karsh, again loves the album. My baby girl is done with middle school. She is going to be a freshman at Harrison (where I teach Anatomy) this fall and she’s really nervous. She’s a quiet girl, but once you get her out of her shell, she never shuts up—I mean that in the most loving way possible. My being there will help, but I’m thinking of taking up a job at the University, we live on a college campus. ~Felicity

July 2009 Dear Felicity,
Thanks for all your acknowledgement toward Green Day. Even if you won’t admit to being a fan, I do appreciate all the kind words you have to say about the albums. And I find it humorous how you give me Karsh’s review of our albums too. It makes me feel good to know that there are still people who’ve liked us from the beginning.
Joey is starting high school too. He just graduated middle school and will be attending Piedmont High School in the fall. He’s not nervous. I think he’s excited. He’s trying out for the soccer team and I think he has a chance of making it—maybe not Varsity, but definitely Junior Varsity—and possibly a sub for the Varsity players.
Jakob will be going into 5th grade and he is quite the baseball player. I’ve been coaching off and on and I love watching him play. I used to play when I was in high school. I’m so proud of Jake, he’s a pitcher now. They don’t live pitch in his age-group yet, but he’s learning the basics of live pitching and he’s getting good. He’ll be live pitching next year. Just recently he hit his first homerun! It was way out there, literally, it was out of the ball park! It was such an exhilarating moment! I was so happy I was there to see it!
I wish Amnesty good luck on her first day of high school. She’ll be fine. I bet she’s smart and she’s just psyching herself out. ~Billie Joe

March 2010 Dear Billie Joe,
Remember when I told you that Amnesty liked playing tennis? Well she gave up all her other sports and started taking tennis seriously. She made the tennis team! As a freshman she’s number 3 singles Junior Varsity! I’m so proud of her! I went to her first match and she played a senior and beat her 8-0! I’m so proud of her! She’s proud too! She didn’t know she played a senior until her coach told her. She loves this sport. And I can see it in her eyes when she plays. It’s a hoot in a half to watch. ~Felicity
