Struck to the Earth Like Lightning

Fallen Angel

Geniveve curled into a ball and pulled the blankets up closer to her chin as the thunder crackled outside her window. The blankets made her feel safe. Without them, she felt exposed, and vulnerable.

The lightning was better. It didn’t make her as scared. After all, it was just a bolt of light. Inside the house, it couldn’t touch her. But the thunder made her quiver. Another sonic boom sounded from outside, and then she heard a loud crack. She jumped out of bed and rushed to the window to see a big tree falling backwards, away from the house. She was lucky this time.

Another loud crack of thunder sounded and she jumped, running back into bed and tugging the blankets up around her. A few minutes passed and the storm seemed to have passed. She got out of bed, slipped on a pair of shoes and grabbed her black sweater before padding down the hallway and towards the back door. She looked back briefly to assure that no one was there, and then continued outside.

It was still rather windy out, and the moon bore its eyes into her skull as she wandered along the woods that lined her backyard. She approached the fallen tree, examining its broken trunk and weeping roots.

She ventured deeper into the wood, looking around at the destroyed environment. The lightning had charred a few of the trees, and the ground was soaking wet from the harsh rain. She wandered deeper and deeper, soaking up the atmosphere.

From behind, she heard a rustling in the fallen trees’ leaves. She whipped around at the sound, and began to back up. She backed up and hit a tree behind her. She grasped the tree with her hands from behind and watched with fearful eyes as a tall man with big, black wings rose from the ashes.

He stood, lifted his head, and saw her cowering against the tree trunk. He reached his hand out to her and she still crouched away from him.

“Don’t be afraid.” He said, taking a few more steps towards her. “My name is Andy.”

She released her grip from the tree and stepped closer to him. She observed his features in the moonlight. He had sharp cheekbones, curvy lips, striking blue eyes, and raven black hair.

“I’m Geniveve.” She took the hand he held out extended towards her. She marveled at his wings, and dark appearance. “What… What are you?” She wondered aloud.

Andy chuckled slightly, and smiled. “I’m a fallen angel.” He informed her. “Struck to the earth like lightning.”

She was so entranced by him. It was as if his powers had placed a spell on her mortal soul. She couldn’t take his eyes off him. He was beautiful.

“Are you human?” He asked her.

She threw herself back into reality. “Oh, yes, I am.” She said.

He smiled again, but more knowingly this time, rather than sincerely. “You love me.” He read her mind.

She stepped back. She did love him, but she didn’t know him. He was a fallen angel; a strange creature that isn’t supposed to exist.

“Don’t be afraid.” He continued. “You are the most beautiful human I have laid eyes on, and I want you to be mine. You were destined to find me here in this wood, which means you were destined for me.”

Geniveve couldn’t complain. A tall, dark, handsome angel stood before her, beckoning her to join his side as his partner. “Were you an angel before?” She asked out of curiosity.

He nodded. “As soon as angels’ feet touch their wings grow black, the gates of heaven stay locked shut, and they are doomed to a life alone on Earth until they find a human that they become infatuated with.”

“Then what happens?” She asked.

Andy smirked. “Would you like to find out?”

She nodded eagerly. Andy smirked again and moved his head forward, planting a kiss on her plump lips. She felt a spark of electricity run through her veins at his touch and she let her eyes slip closed. His lips moved effortlessly with hers, and she could feel her heart melting with each slip of the tongue.

Andy pulled away and she opened her eyes. He smirked at her one last time, and disappeared. She became confused, and looked around for him, but she felt strange. She looked down and saw she was now clad in all black. She slowly turned her head to look around her shoulder, and saw big, black angel wings attached to her back. Andy had tricked her. Now, she was the Fallen Angel, doomed to roam the Earth alone for eternity.
