Liar

Feels So Real

She sat there and watched as he was bent over the glass counter, a woman with bright yellow hair tied back at the nape of her neck, her blue eyes flashing with smiles as she pulled out some gold rings. Setting them out in front of Zacky, she watched as he scanned over the rings.

Half of her wanted to slap the shit out of him because he thought Ashley liked gold—she hated it! But that other half, the one that she shoved down her throat and pushed aside wanted to wrap him in her arms, wanted to plant her lips against his and just get lost in him. But she had to get rid of the image, to swallow down the cry that threatened to fall from her lips—because this ring wasn’t going to belong to her; instead, it belonged to a pretty, petite red head that lived down the street from her, with eyes as wild as the shore off of Hawaii.

She wasn’t even knew that kind of beauty—not with her awkward, pear-shaped body and hair that could never be tamed. Sighing, she removed herself from the wall and walked over to him. Gazing up into his beautiful orbs, she frowned and he looked down at her with a curious, but obviously lost, look.

“No,” She said, swinging her head to the side to look at the blonde. She saw her tame-tag and it read ‘Kate’.

“What, Sarah?” Zack asked his eyes wide and confused. Sarah rolled her eyes and looked over at Kate.

“Hi, he’s an idiot.” She said with a smile ash she flashed her pearly white teeth. “Can you show us the silver rings, please?”

“What’s wrong with gold?” Zack asked and Sarah turned towards him and he followed suit. Sarah crossed her arms over her chest and let out a puff of air.

“Ashley hates gold, Zachary.” Shut muttered. “You should know that.” Zacky sighed and ran his hands through his un-gelled hair. Sarah gave a little laugh at its weirdness before turning back towards the cheery woman. “Maid of Honor-to be” She said with a chuckle.

“Good idea bringing her along, Mr. Baker.” Sarah grinned and pushed Zacky aside as she scanned over the assortment of rings in front of her—there were many rings that were big, chunky and ugly, some that were just too simple and could use a few more diamonds—and some that just didn’t say I love you enough. Zacky would point out a couple, but at the look on his best friends face he would pull his fingers away and mutter words under his breath. Katie had left them to give them some free space as she worked with other customers.

Finally landing on the one, she grinned triumphantly and turned towards her best friend, taking the small silver set into her palms—they were two rings, the first being simple and elegant at the same time. The second one was much bigger, but the diamond wasn’t too large or too small. The sides around the diamond were twisted beautifully, with tiny diamonds all around. In other words—it was beautiful. “This one!” She exclaimed as she put her palm out for Zacky to see.

When his eyes landed on the small, silver rings he grinned and couldn’t help but let out an excited ‘yes!’ before grabbing onto his best friend, careful of the ring, and crushing her with his arms. He knew bringing her along would benefit him, but he also knew that this was his way of asking her for her opinion, and by the way it looks it seems she loves the idea. “This is great, Sar!” He said as he turned around and called out to Katie. When Katie nodded in acknowledgement, Zacky beamed down at the woman he’s known for nearly half his life. “Thank you, Sar.” He said before placing a quick kiss on her cheek.

Before buying it, Zacky had made Sarah try on the ring—both she and Ashley were the same size fingers. As she gazed down at her ring finger, she could feel tears beginning to prick at her eyes; she could almost, almost, believe that this was hers, that he would belong to her and that she would soon bear his last name. Instead of being Sarah Paige Mellette, she would become Sarah Paige Baker and she wanted that more than she ever wanted anything.

But that was all just a dream, and she was happy that he was happy; but she couldn’t help but wonder; why, oh why was her heart tearing into little pieces?
