The Girl Next Door

Chapter 18

I slept at Niall's place, as usual, and we woke up at five forty five a.m. His dad had already packed everything and the boat was ready.

"Morning guys." He said with a smile when we entered the kitchen, it smelled heavenly.

"Morning." We muttered, not fully awake yet.

"I've made you some breakfast!" Niall's mom says excitingly. And we smiled as she took out some plates. We sat down around the island, and I couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy. This family was so...normal. I forced myself to think about something else as Mrs. Horan put the plates full of eggs, sausages, bacon and potatoes in front of us.

"Thank you so much Mrs. Horan." I said, staring at my plate.

"It's nothing, Kaleigh. Now eat up!" She said.

"We have to leave in about thirty minutes." Mr. Horan said, looking at his watch. We nodded in silence as we ate as quickly as possible. "Think we're gonna win this year son?" He asked Niall with a smirk.

"We got this one, dad. Especially now that we've got an extra person on the boat with us." He said with a smile, referring to Harry's dad. The annual event allowed a maximum of three sets of fathers and sons on a boat.

"I hope you're right." His father started. "But nonetheless, we'll still go out to celebrate after!" He announced with a small laugh and we all joined in. I had never seen them actually win this competition, but a celebration was indeed always involved afterwards, and I was always perfectly welcome.

"Sounds perfect." Niall answered before taking another bite of his food.

The rest of our breakfasts were eaten in silence, and I couldn't help but feel, once again, curious. I know Harry always jokes around saying his father's a drunk, but he's one of the town's most respected man. And when Harry found out his father was signed up, he almost lost his temper and he got all serious, which he hardly ever does. What happened behind closed doors? I guess I'm not the only one with secrets.
