Otaku Girl

One: Straight Foward

Olive stands in the back of the bookshop she works in organizing the new shipments. She takes notice of each book she puts in the shelves and while she is an avid reader she usually only reads translates Japanese novels and manga. She pulls out on book from the box and groans at the title, Moby Dick. She can only imagine how boring this book must be.

“It’s not as bad as people make it seem.” A deep voice breaks through Olive’s train of thought and she looks to her right where a guy no older than her is standing. She blushes and turns away letting her long hair cover her face as she continues to stock the books.

The guy continues to stare at the shy girl and lets a smile slip onto his face. He walks a few steps closer to her causing Olive to tense up as his hand hovers over hers and he takes the Moby Dick book. “I think I’ll take this.” He whispers his hot breath hitting the back of Olive’s ear. She shudders at the feeling and turns to her left so her hair falls over her face the guy can’t see her.

“Nolan can we go now!” another male voice calls out sounding completely bored and uninterested.

Olive turns to her right where the guy is still standing a kind smile on his face as he pulls away, “I’ll be coming back.” He says flashing her a smile before turning and walking away. Once he’s gone Olive lets out a deep breath and leans against the bookshelf.

What just happened?

“Olive comes down for dinner.” Olive’s sister Violet calls from outside her room. Olive stays put on her chair, her eyes hooked on the TV screen where she’s watching one of the newest anime to come out this summer. Her curtains are drawn shut so that the cold doesn’t freeze up her room. Along her walls she has shelves of manga and figures that’s she’s collected and her bed is a mess of sheets and pillows.

The door opens and Violet walks in dresses in a pair of legging and a hoodie. “Dinner.” She reminds her sister. Olive nods and keeps her eyes fixed on the screen where there was a bunch of guys swimming a pool. “Is that Free?” Violet asks.

There are many similarities between the two sisters, like how they book enjoys manga and anime only Violet doesn’t revolve most of her life around it. Violet still goes out with friends and spends time outside of the house. Olive is different; she has no friends to hang out with and spends her time as her mother puts it, “obsessing” over anime and manga.

The anime finishes and both girls stand up and stretch realizing they left their parents downstairs waiting for them. They both hurry out the dark room and now the stairs to the dinning room where their plates are placed on the table.

Dinner ends quickly and Olive helps her mom put the dishes away before heading back up to her room, “Wait Olive.” Her mother calls, as she’s half way up the steps. Olive groans and turns around to face her mom. “Mrs. Garcia called and said a boy was flirting with you at work today.”

Olive instantly blushes at the memory; she worked so hard over the past few hours to erase that moment from her mind. “Um it was nothing.” At that moment Olive wished she didn’t accept the job from her moms friend.

“Okay well that’s all.”

Olive nods and hurries back up the stairs only to see Violet standing there with a smirk on her face. Violet grabs Olive’s arm and drags her into her room, “Tell me everything.” Violet demands sitting on the bed and grabbing a stuffed panda toy to hold onto.

“It’s really nothing.” Olive groans as she stares down at the light hardwood floors. “Just this guy talked to me about Moby Dick.” Olive adds under her breath.

Violet doesn’t respond to her and Olive looks over to her wondering why the sudden silence. Olive only finds Violet smiling at her and Olive rolls her eyes and leaves the room making sure to close the door a little roughly behind her to make a point.

Olive enters her room and sits on her desk chair, letting out a deep breath. She began to spin around her eyes scanning her room.

She didn’t know that was only the first encounter with the mystery boy.
