One More Night
Chapter 24
“Are you serious? He’s flying out here to see you?” Anna’s shock was nearly comedic as her blue eyes rounded to the size of saucers and her mouth hung open. Bree had finally admitted to her best friend that Marc had gotten into contact with her, and while Anna seemed to have missed the part where Marc had flown out once already, the fact he was coming back had her astounded.
“Yeah, this is the second time. He… he told me everything; came clean about every little detail,” she confirmed, and Anna all but fell into a seat on the couch.
“Oh my God… so he wants to be involved with the baby?”
“Not just the baby,” Bree sighed, easing herself down onto the loveseat. She did chuckle this time at her friend’s expression, even when she felt the little kick against her ribs.
“WHAT?”
“He’s divorced. Well, almost divorced – I guess his wife’s been hard to get a hold of while she’s been running around with the other guy,” Bree rolled her eyes, feeling anger towards the woman although she didn’t really have a right to. She was, in fact, Marc’s wife while she’d been the ‘other woman’. But to Bree it was still no excuse for the way she’d treated and hurt Marc.
“Whoa, what?”
“She’d been cheating on him for like a year, and he found out and told her he wanted a divorce. He said that things had been miserable with them for a long time but he’d held on because that’s what you’re supposed to do – try and make it work. He told me that’s why he couldn’t make himself tell me everything during the summer, because he felt terrible putting me in that position and that he couldn’t stand to hurt me with it. So when he went back he threw himself into trying to fix things with her but she wasn’t interested. So bam, divorce,” Bree explained, and Anna nodded slowly.
“Okay, so he’s divorcing her. Back to this part about wanting to be involved, not just with the baby?”
“He… he wants another chance,” Bree whispered. She knew she should be angry and hurt over the fact he would hope for one or even ask, but inside she knew she could never hold that over his head. Not after seeing how much it had hurt him to end up hurting her. Or when she learned that he would have chosen her over his wife at any point since they started being involved. That he had real feelings for her, and that they were still there. How he treated her like she was the only woman in the world and held her opinions and thoughts in high regard. Aside from the mess that he’d got himself into during the summer Marc was, all in all, everything Bree had ever hoped for.
“How can he even think that you would consider that? After everything he did to you? How upset you where when he left and when you found out he was married?” Anna snapped, her knuckles white and her cheeks pink with frustration. Bree knew that her best friend was only lashing out because of concern, but it stung Bree a bit to think that this was the picture she’d managed to paint of Marc.
“But Anna, he also made me happier than I’d been in a long time,” she quietly pointed out, swallowing hard before continuing. “He knows he fucked up Anna; believe me he does. It eats away at him, I could tell as soon as I saw him. But… if what we had in the summer was any indication…I mean, this could be the long haul. I’ve never felt the way Marc makes me feel.”
Bree could tell Anna was having a hard time understanding where she was coming from. Not that she could blame her best friend; she’d been lied to, devastated, and then left pregnant, but the fact was Marc did the things he did because he had cared and hadn’t wanted to lose her, or hurt her, even though he couldn’t avoid it.
“You’re actually considering it?”
“I just… I don’t know yet okay? It’s kind of like when you and Mike get into a huge fight and split up for a while, even though you swear up and down you’re done you know that the minute he apologizes you’ll take him back and the two of you will forget about it and move on. It’s the same feeling for me,” she tried to go to a place where Anna would understand, hoping for the best.
“Mike never lied to me about having someone else in his life. He was never married and started seeing me on the side and lied about the whole thing,” was the cold answer she received. Bree sighed, feeling her tear ducts begin to work, thanks to her hormones and frustration.
“Look, I don’t know how else to explain it! He still means a lot to me, even after everything he did Anna, and… and there’s someone else to consider now,” she tried to keep the sniffle out of her voice as best as she could, even though she knew it was a losing battle.
“This isn’t 1950 – you don’t have to marry someone because you’re having their baby. Being happy is more important than sticking it out,” Anna reminded her.
“And that’s what Marc is trying to do Anna – he’s done sticking it out with his wife and being miserable when we were happy. That’s what both of us want, to be happy,” Bree managed to shoot back at her, before excusing herself to the bathroom to try and get a hold on the tears.
“Bree, Bree I’m sorry – don’t cry sweetie,” Anna was soon at the door, having understood why Bree had made such a hasty exit.
“I’m sorry! Goddamn hormones always messing with me and making me do stupid things,” Anna let out a strangled chuckle at her grumbling, and sat outside the door rambling until Bree had a hold of herself and felt like facing her friend again.
As soon as she was out the door Anna folded her into a hug, which nearly started the waterworks again.

Hey guys! So, I'm really sad, because apparently yesterday Jordan broke a bone in his leg and is now out for an undefined period of time. So after reading that and getting all down in the dumps I thought I'd do some writing to cheer myself up lol. Hope you guys like the chapter! I can't believe how close we are to the end of the story, which is kind of sad but really exciting at the same time.
Thanks a million for the comments and support - it means the world to me!
