"Are you alright?"
The teacher interrogates me
with such kindness
you wouldn't know it was
an interrogation.

But I know better
than to tell him
the truth.

"I fell."

He stares
me down,
and I have a feeling he knows
the truth.

He says nothing,
because he realizes
what courage
and cowardice
it takes
to lie.
