Unbreakable

(II)- Rose

Emily was sat at the bar in between Murphy and Conner while Rocco stood behind the bar facing them. A cat walked past them and Emily couldn't help but laugh at the memory. Rocco grabs four shot glasses and fills three of them with alcohol and one with water, which is the one he pushed towards Emily. "Can't risk any harm coming to baby Rocco, can we?" he asks with a massive grin on his face. "What makes you think I'm going to call the baby after you? And more importantly, why do you all assume it will be a boy?!"
"I'm dead remember? I know shit" Emily knew he was having light hearted fun like he always does, but it was a cold reminder of the truth. "How could I forget" she muttered to herself under her breath, but they had all heard her comment. "Ye look good Roc" Conner said, changing the subject.
"You two don't. I would say three but it wouldn't be worth a slap" all four of them laughed because they all knew he was right; he'd always get a playful punch on the arm or slap around the face for insulting her. When the laughter stopped Murphy tried to explain the reason for the long faces, "Yeah. Well...we had a friend-"
"I know. He was a big boy" Greenly was a big boy who knew the risks involved, but he didn't deserve to die; not then and not the way he did.
"Well, if it weren't for us, maybe the two of ye would..." Emily thought to herself that Conner should of said, 'if it weren't for Emily' because she blamed herself for both of their deaths.
"You," Rocco said pointing at her, "stop thinking like that. And would what? Never have stood for anything?" Emily quickly tried clearing her head of thoughts so that Rocco couldn't dig any deeper into the guilt she was truly feeling. "What are ye talkin' about Roc?" Murphy asked, referring to what he meant by, stood for anything.
"I made my decision and stood next to you. And it was an honour. And I wouldn't change it for the world. Not one minute of it" he stared straight at Emily as he said the last sentence, Emily finding it reassuring to hear. "Now," he said pushing the boys their drinks and picking up his own, "Sláinte."
They all raised they're shot glasses and downed their drinks; Emily silently wishing she could have something stronger. "Ye know, he was sort of a badass though wasn't he?" Murphy said, it being a rhetorical question rather then one he wanted answered.
"Shades of Eastwood" Conner replied.
"Charlie Bronson" Emily joined in.
"Duke fucking Wayne!" Rocco hollered, to which Emily and the boys repeated in unison.

*Cut to rooftop*

Rocco jumped onto the lower part of the roof before starting a little speech.
"Men build things, then we die. It's in our fucking DNA! That's what we do!" Rocco stated, gesturing around to the buildings that surrounded them. Murphy took Emily's hand to help her as she and the brothers jumped down to where Rocco was standing.
"And when it all falls down?" the patronising tone was clear in Emily's voice, but the guys knew that she was joking.
"We build it right back up again!"
"But this time bigger...better!" All the boys were now trying to give the male race a boost. Emily had always hated their sexists jokes which is why they always made them.
"Look! Look what we can do. Look how fuckin' beautiful we are"
"You can thank the females who designed it for that" Emily threw in, causing Rocco to point a stern, warning finger at her before smiling and continuing.
"You think the men that built all this had it easy?"
"Hard men!" Murphy yelled, putting a fist up in front of Emily's face which she shoved away whilst laughing.
"Doing hard shit!" Conner shouted, now pointing up to the sky in front of her face. She returned the gesture, the only difference being she used her middle finger.
"And that gives me a hard on!...but not in a gay way or anything" Emily glanced at the boys to see their reaction to what he just said and they looked the same as her. "No, of course not" Emily said trying to stifle her laugh.
"Yeah, goes without sayin'"

*Cut to ice rink*

They were stood in the middle of an ice rink which Emily was less then pleased about. She hated ice-skating and Rocco knew that, which is why she was inwardly cursing and aiming insults at him. "Hey, that's just rude!" Rocco said causing Emily to laugh and lose her footing. All three of them moved to grab her but it was Murphy who quickly grabbed her and steadied her. When she was safely standing on two feet, she noticed all three of them release an intake of breath that she didn't think any of them had noticed they had taken. "I'm pregnant guys, not glass"
"What the difference? They're both fuckin' fragile" Murphy pointed out a very good point that Emily had previously over looked. "Are we talking about pregnant women or how fucking brilliant men are?" Emily knew this would refresh an easily distracted Rocco. "Oh right. I'm so sick of all of this self help, twelve step, leftover hippie generation bullshit!"
"Now they don't want you to do anything, right? Just sit there. Don't drink!"
"Don't smoke! Don't drive fast!"
"Don't have unprotected sex!" Emily said the first thing that came to her head but obviously it didn't flow. The three boys stopped and looked at her quizzically, "What? You guys took the good ones, it's all I could come up with." They all shook their heads slightly in amusement. "Yer a fuckin' hypocrite, the only way ye could have gotten knocked up is if-" Emily wanted to change the subject quickly so had to cut Conner off. "Can we get back to Rocco's point now please? We can have the birds and the bee talk later Conn."
"Fuck it! Do it all I say! Do you think Duke Wayne spent all of his time talking about his feelings with a fuckin' therapist?"
"There's no fuckin' way he did!" the brothers bellowed simultaneously.
"John Wayne died with five pounds of undigested red meat in his ass. Now that's a man!"
"No, that's just disgusting" Emily felt sickness coming on at the thought, but then again, she always felt sick recently.
"Real men hide their feelings, why?"
"Because its none of yer fuckin' business!" the three boys said together whilst pointing into the centre of their badly formed circe.
"Men do not cry. Men do not pout. Men jack you in the fucking ass and say..."
Just then Greenly came up behind Emily giving her a quick kiss of the cheek and telling her to name hers and Murphy's son David. She instantly began laughing; firstly because she could never imagine having a kid called David, and secondly because he also thought they were having a boy. Greenly skated further away before stopping and lining up the puke, "thanks for coming out."

Emily shot up on the sofa and took a few deep breaths. It took her a few seconds to realise that the boys were doing the same thing. They all shifted their gaze from one another but none of them said a word, the main reason Emily kept quiet is because she didn't know what to say. She knew it was some sort of dream all along because Rocco and Greenly were dead, but at the same time, it felt so real. Then she thought back to the time Murphy and Conner shared a calling in the prison cell and all the times they've communicated without words, she always put it down to a strange twin bond. But now it appears all three of them shared the same dream...how was that even possible. Emily pushed the blanket off her and made her way to the kitchen to get a drink. She opened the sliding door and quietly closed it behind her before grabbing a glass from the cupboard and walking over to the sink. She turned on the cold water tap and filled her glass half way before shutting off the tap and drinking a mouthful. However she nearly dropped her glass when she heard the sliding door open which surprised her and made her jump. When she turned around, Murphy was closing the door; Emily knew he wanted to talk and in all honesty, so did she. She pulled out one of the chairs from under the table and took a seat, Murphy did the same and sat opposite her. They stared at each other for the longest time in silence but Murphy had so much he wanted to say...he just didn't know where to start. "So what do ye think of the name David?" he couldn't help but grin every time he thought about being a dad and talking about his and Emily's baby. "Well I love the fact it was Greenly's and Rocco's first name, but that's also the reason I don't want it as the baby's first name; it would just be a constant reminder. So I was thinking, if and I repeat, if it is a boy, David could be his middle-name. Maybe James David Macmanus?" Emily took another gulp of water when she had finished, mainly because she was nervous. She didn't want Murphy to be annoyed or upset about the fact she wanted to use her fathers name and not Noah's. But the more she thought about it, the more she realised that 'Macmanus' comes from his side of the family so it's not like she was being unreasonable. "James David Macmanus," Murphy said whilst smiling, "I like it!"
Emily laughed quietly, not wanting to wake the others. Murphy began chuckling as well but a little louder then Emily. "What about if its a girl Murph? What would you like to call her?" Murphy contemplated his answer for a few moments; with everyone being so sure it was a boy he just didn't think to question it. However the more he tried thinking of a name he'd like to call his daughter, the more he became fond of the prospect of having a girl. His little girl. His beautiful Emily, who he soon hoped to make his wife. They would be his girls and he knew for sure that he would never let anything happen to them. Emily and the baby -no matter what gender it may be- were his life, he would move heaven and hell to keep them safe. "Rose... I'd like ta call her rose" he said in the most heartfelt voice, the name obviously symbolising something for him. "Why Rose?" Emily asked, intrigued as to why he picked it. She had never heard of any of his family members with the name but that's not to say he didn't have some. "Well for one, I know that roses are yer favourite. And two because roses just seem delicate and pure, like our little girl would be. Then there's three," Murphy smirked at Emily before getting up and sliding the door open and walking out, however Emily knew he was coming back because he didn't bother to close it behind him. Emily took this opportunity to go to the freezer and get out a tub of ice cream and two spoons from the draw. She was already sat down and on her second spoonful with Murphy came back in and took his seat again. He put his iPod on the table and picked up his spoon and began digging into the tub. After five minutes of eating Emily started to feel sick therefore turning her attention back to their unfinished conversation. "So what was three?" Murphy said nothing, he simple out his spoon down and picked up his iPod. He leaned over the table and gently put one headphone in Emily's ear and one in his own. He scrolled for a few seconds before stopping, he glanced up at Emily and smiled before pressing play.
"Some say love, it is a river
That drowns the tender reed
Some say love, it is a razor
That leaves your soul to bleed

Some say love, it is a hunger
An endless aching need
I say love, it is a flower
And you, it's only seed

It's the heart, afraid of breaking
That never learns to dance
It's the dream, afraid of waking
That never takes the chance

It's the one who won't be taken
Who cannot seem to give
And the soul, afraid of dying
That never learns to live

When the night has been too lonely
And the road has been too long
And you think that love is only
For the lucky and the strong

Just remember in the winter
Far beneath the bitter snows
Lies the seed
That with the sun's love, in the spring
Becomes the rose
"
