Unbreakable

Explanation

Emily awoke the next morning to the glorious sight of 8:45am on the alarm clock; 2hours and 45minutes extra sleep then she usual gets due to the boys getting up early for church. After she had a shower and got dressed she went downstairs and set up the pub making one less job for Doc to do when he got up. Emily was making her way to Murphy and Conner's place when her phone started ringing. She started fumbling through her bag to find it but got distracted at a large crowd of people gathered in the alleyway next to the boys apartment block. Still searching for her phone, she made her way through the sea of people to find out what had happening; by the amount of police her mind started to work overtime worrying for Murphy and Conners safety. Emily finally found her phone and answered it however she was felt for words once seeing the horror in front of her. Two bodies laid motionless face down on the ground but the part that scared Emily the most was the fact they weren't just 'two bodies', they were the bodies of Ivan and one of his minions from last night. Their bandages and the sheer size of the men was a big give away to her. She was so caught up in her thoughts that she had completely blocked out Murphy's concerned voice coming from the other end of the phone. "Em... Emily answer me please!" he all but shouted down the phone, drawing Emily back to reality. "Oh s-sorry. What the hell happened last night Murph?" Murphy was taken-aback by Emily's question but he knew he had to be honest with her; she'd only figure out he was lying even if it was over the phone, they learnt how to read each other very well in their six years of knowing one another. "Come ta the hospital, we'll explain when you get here." "The hospital! Oh my god Murphy are you aright?" Unbeknown to Emily a massive grin graced Murphy's face, not because he wanted her to be upset and panic but because it showed she cared enough about him to be concerned for his safety. He already knew that she cared and loved him but hearing and seeing things that showed him just how much always made him feel warm inside. His and Emily's relationship was the longest either of them had had and neither of them had any intention of it ending any time soon. "Em I'm fine, just come yeah?" Emily let out a slight sigh, "I'm coming now, are you sure you're okay Murphy?" Murphy chuckled slightly, "Aye babe, I gotta go see you in a bit." With that he hung up the phone to help his brother who was still having trouble walking.

When Emily got to the hospital he pasted Doc who was walking towards the exit with a reasonable large bag in his hand. They both stopped and Doc thanked her for helping last night and this morning before pointing her in the direction of where Murphy and Conner would be. When she walked through a set of double doors into yet another corridor Murphy jumped off a gurney which he was sharing with a young boy. He wrapped his arms around her waist and lifted her up while she wrapped her arms around him burying her face in his neck. They stayed like that for a few moments, the only change being Murphy putting her back down so she was standing once again. It wasn't until Emily looked up and saw Conner watching them, himself looking like he had gone 3 rounds with Mike Tyson. "Conn what the hell happened to you!?" she asked making her way towards him. Conner just glanced past her and looked at Murphy, having another conversation through their eyes not words. Once they all reached the gurney again Murphy helped Conner onto it, taking Murphy's previous space next to the young boy. Neither Conner nor Murphy had answered Emily's question, only adding to the stress and panicking she was already experiencing. Thinking only Murphy would understand him Conner spoke in German, not realising that was Emily's favourite language other then English. "Sie wollen, dass sie alles wissen?" (Do you want her to know everything?) Emily's jaw almost hit the floor; they were talking about her thinking she wouldn't find out. She also couldn't believe they were even contemplating keeping something from her. Conner glanced at Emily before replying, "alles außer den Waffen und Geld, und verharmlosen die Tatsache ich fast erschossen" (everything except the weapons and money, and play down the fact I almost got shot.) That was the last straw for Emily; she couldn't bite her tongue any longer. "Are you kidding me?" Murphy and Conner both turned to face Emily as she stood with her hands slightly raised in the air almost in defeat. "What?" Murphy asked, the confusion clear in his tone of voice. "You almost got shot and you was going to keep that from me?" It was clear to everyone that Emily was hurt and she made no attempt to hide that fact. Conner and Murphy looked at each other in disbelief obviously shocked at the fact Emily was also talented when it came to languages. After the silence ensured Emily decided she no longer wanted to stand looking at the two people that meant the world to her; as in her mind they obviously didn't feel the same way about her. She only got a few steps away before Emily was pulled to a halt by a grip on her wrist. "Em I had no idea ye could speak German" Emily let out a sarcastic laugh before retracting her arm from Murphy's grip. "Well that much was clear, you wouldn't have been talking about lying to me if you had." "Hey I wasn't going ta lie! I just didn't want ye to panic is all" he reached out and gently stroked away a tear- that Emily wasn't even aware she had let fall down her cheek- before letting his hand rest there, caressing her face. "Did you kill them?" Emily asked in such a hushed voice it was barely audible. Murphy dropped his hand to his side again and glanced down at the floor in the little space between them. He couldn't even bring himself to look at her as he merely nodded. He only looked up when he heard Emily's sharp intake of breath and the faint whisper of 'oh my god' escaping her lips. He wanted to explain and tell her that it didn't happen the way she was probably assuming it had but he was lost for words. Conner, noticing his brothers struggle to string a word together let alone a sentence lowered himself off the gurney and slowly limped towards them to step in and help him explain. "Emily it was only in self defence. They kicked down the door an came marchin' in with guns raised. Made me handcuff meself to the toilet and dragged Murph away sayin' they were gonna put a bullet in his head." Conner then nudge his brother in the arm, indicating for him to man up and take over. "Aye, they put me on me knees and pointed the gun at me head. Next thin' I know it's raining toilets and Conner's." Emily couldn't help but scoffed at the last sentence even though she knew it was no laughing matter. They both watched her, trying to use her body language as a sign to work out how she was feeling; seen as she wasn't speaking. After a sigh she began nodding slightly, "I'm just glad you're both alive and in reasonably good condition." Conner let out a small laugh- mainly because it hurt if he laughed to much- and wrapped an arm around her shoulders before placing a kiss on the side of her head. Emily couldn't help but wonder what would happen now. She could understand that if they didn't fight back it would be their bodies laying face down in the alley, the thought alone sending a chill down her spine. But on the other hand she couldn't stop picturing the families of the men that had die because of Murphy and Conner. In the harsh light of day even though it was self defence and she fully believed that, it still made her feel uneasy deep down inside. "I'm just glad ye didn't come back with us after all" the expression on Murphy's face showing Emily he genuinely was relieved at the fact. She smiled back at him slipping her hand into his own before speaking, "So what happens now?" Conner moved his arm away and hobbled back to the gurney, Emily and Murphy following hand in hand close behind him. "Doc dropped off a card for some FBI agent. We're gonna turn ourselves in, explain ta them it was self defence" Emily was pleased to hear they were going to do the right thing, she just prayed it didn't back fire on them resulting in her losing them anyway. "I'm coming with you, I was at the bar I can verify what happened to cause all of this."

When they reached the police station Paul Smecker asked Conner and Murphy to follow him into an interview room but Murphy quickly interjected that he wanted Emily to come as well, to which Paul put no argument against. It was Emily's first time in a police station let alone being interrogated by- what Emily believed to be- a top FBI agent. Once they were all seated Smecker slowly reached his hand forward towards a voice recorder, "This conversation is going to be recorded. Just answer to the best of your knowledge." Before he could hit the record button Murphy politely put his hand forward to ask him to wait. Emily wasn't entirely sure as to way he was doing so until he leaned in closer to Conner and spoke in a hushed tone in Latin. "et quid ei de pecunia tormenta" (What do we tell him about the guns and money?) "Surrexerunt et iustus. Bum musta advolvit eos illuc ante vigilum" (We just got up and left. Bum musta rolled them before the police got there.) All three men turned to Emily as she spoke, head down not looking at them; just staring at the table. "Ubi sunt tormenta et pecuniam" (Where are the guns and the money?) Murphy looked at Conner before looking back at Emily, "salvum" (safe) With that Murphy turned to Smecker to tell him they were ready for him to continue. He asked them about what happened and if they knew how the men ended up with their interesting bandages. After they had finished the story the topic turned to languages. "So, how is it you guys are fluent in Russian?" he asked manly towards the boys rather then Emily. She wondered as to whether or not he knew she was there half the time, if he did he was hiding the acknowledgment of her presence well. "We paid attention in school." Smecker seems very intrigued, "Know any other languages?" "Aye. Our mother insisted on it." As the boys showed off their talent Emily took it upon her self to enlighten Smecker as to which languages they were speaking. It was only when Murphy said their neighbourhood was 'A hundred percent Irish' Emily scoffed and joined in. "Ich lebe in Ihrer Nähe, und ich bin nicht irisch" (I live in your neighbourhood and I'm not Irish) Both Conner and Murphy laughed leaving Smecker looking like a gooseberry being the only one who didn't understand the joke. Conner then started talking Spanish saying that Smecker must be 'real real good' to have worked it all out. "o simplemente eres malo en el encubrimiento de un asesinato" (Or you're just bad at covering up a murder) Emily looked up from the table which she had been staring at the entire time and smirk at the boys to show she was joking, none of them classed it as murder. "So miss?" Smecker said catching Emily off guard; he was actually talking to her! "Moore, but Emily is fine." Smecker smiled and nodded slightly, "Emily, how it you are fluent is many languages?" Emily half heartily laughed before replying, "I thought I'd need to know them when I went travelling, turns out bad English and Irish Gaelic is all I needed to learn. I've got the bad English fucking mastered but my Irish leaves something to be desired." Everyone laughed properly for the first time that day. Murphy and Conner are forever telling Emily that's she's a funny girl as she always has them in hysterics but she never saw herself as a funny person. Murphy loved that about her, she wasn't a vain girl who cared more about her looks and went around fishing for compliments; she's actually quite the opposite, she loved nothing better then lounging around in a pair of sweats and one of Murphy's tops that would drown her smaller frame with her hair thrown up in a messy bun and you could pay her a complement and she'd thank you for it and move on, not pay the whole 'Oh no I'm not pretty, I'm so ugly' sort of card. To be honest it was only Murphy, Conner, Rocco and a few other of the locals at the pub that payed her complements, but that's just how Emily and Murphy liked it. Smecker said the boys were not going to be charged and were free to go if they wished but the boys asked it was possible for them and - with a bit of gentle persuasion aimed towards her- Emily to spend the night in a spare holding cell. Went night came Emily and Murphy curled up together on one of the small cell beds with Conner on the one next to them. Emily fell asleep resting her head on Murphy's bare chest enjoying the gentle movement of his chest moving up and down all whilst listening to his heartbeat. He slowly stroked her hair with the arm he had around her holding her to him. Neither them nor Conner knew what the upcoming event of the night would trigger.
