Unbreakable

Understanding

Emily started to stir in her sleep feeling something dripping on her cheek as she still had her face on Murphy's chest. Part of her thought it was just her mind playing tricks on her due to her recent lack of sleep, which is why she tried to block out the first few droplets that fell upon her face. However as the dripping became more frequent she could no longer ignore it. She sat up and tried to gather her bearings but quickly jumped in shock as Murphy and Conner began gasping for air. Before she could even comprehend what could be wrong they were both simultaneously sitting upright, face to the ceiling, breathing heavily. To say Emily was scared was an understatement; she had never seen them like this before, it looked as though both brothers were possessed. She tapped Murphy repeatedly on the arm to try and get him to snap out of whatever state he and Conner had both slipped into but it didn't work. With the water still dripping heavily on them Conner and Murphy turned to look at each other, "Destroy all that which is evil..." Conner said whilst trying to level out his breathing. "... So that which is good may flourish" Murphy said finishing off his sentence. They continued to look at each other before Conner noticed the scared expression on Emily's face, therefore indicating for Murphy to look as well. When he did he was startled by the fear within her eyes. She was sat up on the bed with her back pressed against the wall behind her. He went to stroke her arm to reassure her and show her that everything was alright but she flinched away from his touch. "Em, what's wrong?" Emily didn't say anything as she laid back down on a now wet bed with her back now to Murphy. Without even looking she could tell Murphy and Conner were looking at each other in confusion, neither of them knowing what to do. After a while she felt Murphy shift in the bed so he was laying down beside her. Emily was as close to the wall as she could possibly get, trying to space herself from Murphy after what just happened. She didn't really know what to make of what actually happened. She kept repeating what they said, 'destroy all that which is evil, so that which is good may flourish' Emily has never been the most religious girl and her belief in God had always been limited. She believed in justice but she didn't agree with murder, which is what the boys were implying. She loved Murphy more then she's ever loved anyone else before and Conner was like the brother she never had but always wanted. As much as the thought of them killing people made her feel uneasy, she knew deep down no matter what they did she could never stop loving them. Emily continued to lay there thinking and trying to process how she was feeling when she felt an arm wrap around her middle and a face bury into the back of her neck. Just by his touch Emily always felt safe, all her worries would melt away into nothing. It was in that moment that she decided she would try to support the boys in their new career path, ignoring the fact she didn't one hundred percent agree with it. Murphy jumped slightly as Emily turned around and planted a small kiss on his lips before repositioning herself in Murphy's arms.

The next morning Emily's eyes fluttered open to a beeping sound at the end of the bed. Murphy now had his top on and his legs hanging off the bed facing Conner with his back to her. Murphy grabbed a pager from his bathrobe from yesterday and Emily could only assume it was one of the Russians. Murphy glanced back at Emily and was startled slightly to see her looking up at him. He didn't say anything as he stroked some hair out of her face before leaning down and kissing her on this lips. Emily got the impression it was his attempt of an apology for scaring her last night and a way of letting her know everything was going to be ok. They could tell a lot from the way the other person kissed them; it's sort of their way to expressing themselves when they don't have the words to say. Both Conner and Murphy stood up and put on their coats while Emily reached down and grabbed hers shoes and slipped them on. Murphy held out his hand and Emily took it as they followed Conner out of the cell. After the boys were congratulated on their bravery and Conner made a quick phone call -to whom Emily was extremely intrigued about but thought it best she didn't find out- before they all started the short walk back to Mcginty's. It was an extremely silent walk which was very rare when the three of them were together, but it was clear they all had things on their minds. Conner was thinking about their hit coming up tonight, Murphy was thinking about the hit and worrying about how Emily was coping with the news that her boyfriend and his brother were planning on clearing the streets with criminals and Emily was trying to work out what the boys were thinking and planning. Obviously they were going to kill people, but who? When? Where? How? The only question she didn't need to work out was why. She decided to break the silence and take his opportunity to get the answers to the questions swirling around her head. "Are you starting it off tonight?"
"Aye, the Russian pager gave me a time and a location so we're gonna hit it."
"Do you know who the people are?"
"They're assholes Em, that's all I need to know" Murphy said lighting up a cigarette she hadn't even notice him place in his mouth or Conner as well for that matter. That didn't surprise her though, they did practically everything together, now being able to add killing 'assholes' to the list. "How are you going to do it?" Just as Emily asked, they had reached the entrance to Mcginty's. "Exchange the guns an money from the Russians ta get some guns an shit of our own, I know a place" Conner said taking a drag from his cigarette. "I'll go get the bag while you finish off shortening you're life expectancy by another six minutes" she said quickly walking into Mcginty's before they could retort back at her while both brothers laughed at her billionth attempt to get them to quit smoking, knowing it was never going to work but loving her perseverance anyway. Emily walked inside and found Doc wiping down the tables, even though she had already done it this morning. They talked briefly asking the usual 'how are you' type questions. But as much as Emily loved Doc and saw him as family she didn't really have time for his 'fuck! ass!' and stutters because she knew the boys were waiting. However she completely forgot the fact the boys were waiting when she caught sight of one of the guns in the bag. Emily had always been curious about them because she's only ever seen them in the movies before and now she had the chance to see and even touch one... she couldn't resist. Cautiously she reached in and enclosed her hand around the gun. The first thing that surprised her was the weight of it; they always made them seem light on t.v but in actual fact it was kind of heavy. The size also surprised her because in all the movies she watched with the boys, it was always the guys that did the shooting. Now seeing it in her smaller sized hands, it completely dominated them. All these thoughts and questions were running around in her head, are all guns like this one? Why do people carry these around? These things kill people and yet people carry them around like its a fashion statement. She was so caught up in her world she hadn't notice Murphy leaning against the door frame watching her intently. He took her holding the gun as a good thing, it showed she was more inquisitive rather then fearful. "Weird isn't it?" He asked, making Emily jump so much her hand squeezed tighter around then gun and pulling back the trigger. After hearing the loud bang Conner and Doc ended up standing behind Murphy watching Emily stare at the now burst barrel of beer spilling out around her. Murphy was debating whether or not to speak because it was him talking last time that made her panic. "Wow" Emily whispered to herself unaware that her audience heard her as well. She picked up the bag and turned to the 3 men who have done nothing but state at her since she unintentionally fired the gun. After dropping the gun in the bag she handed it to Murphy before saying, "defiantly weird." It was only the two of them that laughed because they were the only two that understood the joke. "What was it like?" Conner asked as they all walked back to the bar, Doc staying to do something behind it whilst Emily and the boys continued out the door. "It was actually liberating, if the barrel was a criminal he wouldn't have stood a chance" Emily was only joking of course which was clear by the laughter of all three of them combined, she hit the centre of the barrel but not because she was aiming for it. But it did get her thinking, if she found it so liberating to shot an inanimate object she could only begin to imagine how the boys will feel after taking out some criminals; bringing a bit of justice to those they have hurt at the same time. Slowly but surely she was starting to come round to the idea. Bad guys hurt innocent people, good guys(Murphy and Conner) hurt bad guys to save those who are innocent. "Maybe ye can tag along one time, show em who's boss" Conner flashed Emily a playful wink as he spoke. "No. Ain't no way I'm ever letting her come!" Emily couldn't help but smile at Murphy; he's always been a protective boyfriend, in fact he's always been protective of her even before they got together. "Calm down Murph I wouldn't want to go anyway. I'm just gonna stick to pulling pints not triggers, it's what I'm best at." Both boys laughed and once their laughter subsided they glanced at each other and even Emily knew it meant its time to go. She hugged Conner first and he gave her a kiss on the cheek before pulling away. Once she wrapped her arms around Murphy's waist he squeeze her tightly to him. She pulled back slightly to look up at him but they kept their arms entwined round each other. Resting his forehead again Emily's he whispered slightly so only she could hear, "I love ye Emily Moore, more then you'll ever know." Before she had a chance to reply he caught her lips in a kiss that took her by surprise. The kiss lingered; neither of them wanting to pull away first, but Murphy knew they didn't have all night. When he did finally pull away Emily snugged back into his chest, thankful that he didn't object. "I love you Macmanus, Murphy Macmanus" she felt his body shake as he laughed at her James Bond pun. "Don't leave the pub till we get ere, might have ta crash at yours tanight" Emily wanted to say something to keep the conversation going so that he would stay longer but Conner ruined all chances of that by saying they had to go, instead she nodded to show it was fine for them to stay at her place. Murphy gave her once last kiss, making sure it was shorter this time and began walking away with Conner. "Stay safe you two, I except you back in one piece!" They both turned and nodded still continuing to walk away. Reluctantly Emily tore her eyes away from the two figures disappearing into the distance silently praying it wouldn't be the last time she saw them.

Emily spent most of the evening fretting about how the boys, wondering if they were alright. Closing time had been and gone by the time Murphy walked into the bar. Emily let out a sigh of relief to see him and threw herself into his arms where he was more then pleased to have her. "Are you ok? Where's Conner? What happened?" Murphy took hold of Emily's hand and lead her out the pub, waiting for her to lock up with her spare set of keys. "We'll explain everything when we get to Rocco's" it was then that Emily saw Conner and Rocco sitting in the car. To say she was confused as to why Rocco was there and wearing a bell boy suit was a massive understatement. It was a short drive to Rocco's place but Emily only wished it would have gone faster, you could cut the atmosphere with a knife. At the apartment the boys explained what happened at the hotel and surprisingly Emily found herself laughing at some points, never once feeling uncomfortable with what she was hearing. Obviously they didn't go into to much detail because they knew she wouldn't appreciate that, but she wanted to know the basics. Rocco was actually more confused then Emily. "Anybody you think it evil?"
"Yes."
"Don't you think that's a little weird? A little psycho?" Emily tried to hold back her scoff but couldn't, causing all three guys looked at her with an expectant look of their faces. "It's just when you first told me the word that sprung to mind was hypocritical" Murphy looked at her with a 'we'll talk about that later' look as Conner tried to explain it to Rocco again. "Know what I think is psycho Roc? Decent men with loving families go home everyday after work. They turn on the news and see rapists, murderers and child molesters all getting out of prison."
"Mafiosos getting caught with twenty kilos and walkin' on bail the same day."
"And everyone thinks the same thing... Someone should just go kill those motherfuckers."
"Kill em all. Admit it, even you've thought about it." Emily watched Rocco ponder this while Murphy and Conner continued to clean their new, impressive guns which unsurprisingly -to Emily anyway- were identical. "You guys should be in every major city" Emily and the brothers chuckled as Rocco steadily worked himself up into a humorous frenzy. "This is some heavy shit. This is like Lone Ranger-heavy man. Fuck it! There's so much shit that pisses me off. You guys should recruit 'cause I am sick and fuckin' tired of walkin' down the street waiting for one of these crack-piping, ass-wiping, motherless lowlifes to get me!" Emily was nearly crying from laughter by the time Rocco finished his little speech. "Hallelujah, Jaffar" Murphy said, only making Emily laugh more at the stupid name tag Rocco was wearing. "So you're not just talkin' mob guys, right? You're talk in' about pimps and drug dealers and all that shit right?" It was weird hearing them actually discuss who they was going to kill. She already knew it was anyone who's done bad things and all the types of people they had mentioned defiantly had done bad things in their lives but just hearing it being so openly discussed made it feel so surreal. From now on she had to accept the fact that killing people is what they do and she had to accept the fact she wasn't as nice a person as she originally thought, because she agreed with it. "Fuck. You guys could do this every goddamn day!"
"They're more like 7-Eleven. Not always doing business, but always open." All eyes turned to her once more and they all seemed surprised to hear her say such a statement so happily. "That is nicely put" Conner said wrapping an arm around her shoulders as she sat sandwiched between the brothers facing a very enlightened Rocco. From then on the evening consisted of pizza, smoking and guinness and a lot of it. Emily even had to pry a gun out of a drunken Murphy's hands as he tried reenacting their entrance into the hotel suit across the table. "You fuckin' guy. You ruined me. I'm fuckin' done. Permanent package boy" Rocco said out of nowhere. He had been waiting for a chance to prove himself for the past 18 years and in the six years he and Emily had known each other they had shared fairly deep conversations about it. He often said Murphy and Conner couldn't understand what it was like waiting for something your whole life, building up to it, but never actually getting it. Whereas Emily could relate due to her dreams of travelling the world, she spent years saving and planning and for what? Emily and Rocco had a weird relationship; even though Rocco was older then her, Emily always saw him as her little brother, the one she had to look out for when the Macmanus' pushed it to far. "Who says that? You could take credit on it."
"What? Are you serious?"
"Yeah, fuck it. If you think about it, it's all you can do really. You can't tell him it was us. Go in braggin' and shit."
"Climb the corporate ladder, boy."
"Don Rocco!" Emily couldn't help but add to the conversation, the alcohol she had consumed making everything seem ten times funnier.
"Fuck it! I'm doing it. I deserve it. I've been working for those fat bastards since I was in high school and look at this place." Emily took the opportunity to look around the apartment and she couldn't help but think why they came back here and not to hers, but quickly put it down to the fact they had more alcohol here. They all just nodded and watched as Rocco built himself up into another frenzy. "They're fuckin' me man! Hey, they can suck my pathetic little dick. And I'll dip my nuts in marinara just so the fat fucks get a taste of home while they're at it. That's it, it's done, I'm doing it!" Rocco slammed his fist down on the table which followed by a loud bang at the sound of Murphy's gun being fired. Conner quickly dropped to the ground in the opposite direction of where the gun had been fired. Murphy gripped Emily's upper arm and pushed her in the same direction, fumbling over everything in their path. When they had all regained their balance and Rocco realised it wasn't his blood that sprayed all over the wall,-it was in actual fact the cats- Emily began to feel light headed. The last thing she remembered was hearing Murphy say, "I can't fuckin' believe that just happened!" and that was it...she passed out.
