Unbreakable

One of us

Sunlight filtered through the window meaning it was time for Emily to get up. She didn't know the exact time but she knew it was later then her usual wake up time, her hang over probably playing a big part in it. "Mornin' babe" Murphy said kissing Emily before she even had a chance to open her eyes and properly wake up. Noticing her un-enthusiastic attempt to respond to the kiss and her reluctancy to get up, Murphy picked her up off the sofa they had placed her on after blacking out and threw her over his shoulder. "Murphy! Put me down, I feel sick as it is!" Emily quickly regretted telling him that as it only made him make the walk outside the apartment to their smoking area as bumpy and rocky as he possibly could. When they turned the corner they saw -well Emily could only hear- Conner and Rocco having a heated discussion. "No, look. No rolling. Nothing needs to be rolled" Rocco said very unconvincingly. Walking in on the discussion caused Murphy to abruptly stop and carefully put Emily back on two feet again, which she was more then thankful for. "Where are ye goin'? Did you tell him?" Murphy said looking from Rocco to Conner, showing who the questions were directed at. When Conner said he had in fact told Rocco, Emily noticed Murphy's demeanour change. "Then what the fuck?" Murphy asked raising his voice and pacing slightly. "Hey, you don't know that shit for sure."
"Oh, Jesus. You're suck a fuckin' retard!"
"Fuck you!"
"Use your fuckin' brain for once. Is it so unbelievable they don't fuckin' care about ye?" Murphy now had Rocco pinned up against the wall as they grappled with each others coats. "Hey! Stop it, both of you!" Emily said standing in between the two angered men and pushing them both in the chest to get them apart. "Oh yeah. You two fuckin' Micks know what's going on, huh?"
"Fuck it Roc, it's not a fuckin' thing ye should gamble on!" Conner said in an exasperated tone, obviously irritated by Rocco's ignorance.
"I'm the fuck out of here" and with that he began walking away.
"Fine! What kind of flowers ye want at your funeral? Ye dump wop. This is the last time I'm gonna see ye!" Murphy stormed past Emily, only glancing at her for a split second.
"I'll be back a nine, bury the fuckin' cat."
"Hey. You get in there and start getting a bad vibe, get the fuck out quick" by this point Rocco had crossed the road and was walking away and Conner was walking back to the apartment. Emily had to make a quick decision about what she was going to do after their confrontation. Murphy and Conner were both pissed off but they had each other to talk to, whereas Rocco had no one. "Hey Rocco wait up!" Emily said quickly running to catch up with him as he speed walked down the street, but after realising it was her following him he soon slowed down his pace. "Murphy's not going to like this" Rocco said flashing her a 'I'm glad' smirk as they walked side by side.
"No he's not," Emily returned a 'grow up' smirk before continuing. "Rocco, you know they only reacted that way because they care about you right? I mean I know you're not blood but they still consider you a brother... we all do." Rocco placed him arm around Emily's shoulders -just like Conner does- and pulled her into his side. "Do you think they were right? About my boss screwing me over?"
"I honestly don't know Roc. What they're saying makes sense, I mean how could you're boss have got it so wrong?"
Emily turned to look at Rocco as he let out a frustrated sigh, "ergh I don't fuckin' know! But I'm gonna find out."
"How?"
"Go back to the apartment Emily, I'm off to the Lakeview."
"Great, I'm could murder a cup of coffee!" Emily could see that Rocco was on the verge of telling her she couldn't go with him, which is why she pulled the puppy dog face, knowing full well he could never say no to it. "Has anyone ever told ya you're a bitch sometimes" Rocco said laughing, showing his defeat. "You love me really!" Emily scolded at him playfully. He merely squeezed his arm tighter around her and kissed the side of her head, "you keep telling yourself that, sis."

"Hey Rocco, maybe you should give the guys a call. Just to let them know you're alright" the sight of the pay phone giving Emily the idea. Rocco said nothing as he put some change into the slot and began punching in the apartment phone number. He didn't have to wait long for the phone to be picked up, giving Emily the impression they had been sitting around it waiting for their call. "Hey Murph... Yeah she's here... Yeah, anybody call for me?... I'm fuckin' fine... I'll catch you on the flip side." Emily was hoping to speak to Murphy before Rocco hung up but she wasn't quick enough. "You know you don't have to come inside right?" he said as they crossed the road walking towards the entrance of the Lakeview restaurant. "You're not going by yourself Roc. Besides I wasn't joking about that coffee." They had reached the door and Emily was about the walk in when Rocco stopped her. "Listen I don't know what's going to go down in there, so just keep your distance yeah?" Emily didn't want to think to much about what he could mean by that, but if his riddling around in his coat pocket had anything to do with it, she already had a pretty good idea. Nodding, she pushed the door open and walked inside. It was pretty much empty: a -what Emily assumed to be- couple sat at the counter, a man sat on his own in a small private booth behind them and two guys sat in another booth slightly round the corner. Emily sat up on a stool two down from the couple as Rocco made his way towards the two guys sitting together. She couldn't hear what was being said so thought it useless to try and listen, instead turning her attention to the bartender. However she soon noticed he was more intrigued in the conversation taking place a few feet away then she originally was. She heard laughing coming from their direction which she took as a positive thing but after hearing two loud gun shots piercing through the restaurant she knew she was mistaken. The other three diners made a beeline for the door. Emily turned and nearly passed out again, blood having sprayed everywhere. She quickly jumped off her stool and moved closer to the men to see if she could help them, Rocco passing her as she did so. When she got close enough she could see there was nothing anyone could do, one took a bullet to the head and the other took one in the chest by his heart. She tore her eyes away from the blood and bodies as she heard more guns shots and Rocco shouting 'funny' with every shot. "Rocco! What the fuck have you done?" He said nothing as he went over to Emily and grabbed her wrist and began pulling her out of the deli. Every time she tried to pull her wrist back he tightened his grip. They were both running back to the apartment but Emily couldn't get the images out of her head. Rocco's a good guy and something the two guys must have done caused him to flip out on them, that part she understood. But what she couldn't understand is why he turned on the bartender, tears began rolling down her cheeks as she couldn't help but picture someone doing that to Doc. Rocco finally released her now red wrist when they got to the apartment door. He didn't even use a key, he just barged into it causing it to swing open. "Pack your shit!" he said grabbing a duffel bag and tossing who knows what into it. "We got to get out!" Murphy and Conner tried to make sense out of what he was saying as he ran around the apartment flailing and grabbing anything in sight. Emily stood frozen just in the entrance of the door, tears stained her cheeks. When the boys finally gave up asking Rocco questions they began packing up their gear while Rocco began shouting at the girls who kept calling out his name. Murphy looked over at Emily and indicated for her to come over. She didn't make eye contact as she stood in front of him, until he placed his hand under her chin and forced her to look at him. "What happened?"
"H-he killed them. Two young guys and the old bartender." Conner, overhearing the conversation, wanted to know more.
"Did any of them draw on him first?" Emily simple shook her head as a sign for no.
Murphy gave Emily a quick kiss before he carried on packing the gear up. It was a small kiss but it was a show of affection that Emily really needed. With nothing to do she turned her attention to the yelling coming from Rocco. "Shut your fat ass, Rayvie! I can't buy a pack of smokes without running into nine guys you've fucked!" he said whilst pointing his gun at her head. Emily had already seen him kill enough people today, she wasn't going to stand back and watch him kill another. Walking over to him and standing in between him and the girls, she shoved him as hard as she could in his chest; causing him to stumble a few steps back, still with his gun raised... now aiming at her. "Can't you see you're scaring the poor girl! Are you going to put the gun down? Or are you planning on shooting me too?" Hearing Emily's words immediately caught Murphy and Conners attention and they were standing in the middle of the best-friends as they stared at each other. "Let's go" Conner said causing Rocco to look away from Emily. He placed his gun in the waistband of his jeans and picked up his bag before rushing out the door. Murphy and Conner hung back a bit to make sure Emily was alright. "Ye sure your okay babe?" Murphy asked as they approached the car with Rocco already sitting inside. "Yeah I'm fine, lets just get the hell out of here." Emily climbed in the back of the car and scooted past Rocco so that she was sitting behind Conner. They began to drive to god knows where, Emily choosing to stare out the window rather then risk making eye contact with the others.

"Conner stop the car! Stop the fuckin' car man" Rocco said, causing the car to come to a halt outside 'Sin Bin'. Murphy and Conner turned to look at Rocco waiting for an explanation but Emily continued to look out the window. She was thinking about how her life had changed so suddenly. For the past six years she had had the same routine everyday: get up, shower, dressed, work, sleep. She had never seen a dead body, gun or even contemplated knowing a killer; now she had seen five dead bodies, actually fired a gun and knew three killers all of which she loved dearly. "Vincenzo, that fat motherfucker, Yakavetta's right hand. He's the one who set me up. Then went around shooting his mouth off, tellin' everyone I was as good as dead. He goes it there every Wednesday night around 10:00, he jerks off in the same booth to the same titty dancer. Never misses."
"So?" Murphy asked, although to Emily it was already obvious what Rocco was getting at.
"So lets kill the motherfucker. I mean, what are you guys... like that's your new thing right?"
Murphy and Conner glanced at each-other, debating whether or not to go for it.
"Oh, what the fuck? How do you guys decide who you're... I mean, who makes the cut? Is there a raffle or something?"
Emily finally turned to look at Rocco, her movement catching all three guys attention.
"I think it's more of a lucky dip" was all she had to say before looking back out the window.
"Well, truth be known, those first ones just kinda fell into our laps."
Rocco still didn't understand how they picked who to kill.
"I guess we don't really have a system of deciding who." It went quite momentarily until Rocco yelled in excitement, "MEEE! ME! I'm the guy! I know everyone, their habits, where they hang out, who they talk to. I've got phone numbers, addresses. I know who they're fuckin', I know where they live!" He paused, realisation hitting him, "We could kill everyone!" Hearing that startled Emily slightly as she to came to realise that they could in fact kill them all. Rocco knew everyone and the boys were obviously good at taking people out, the three of them combined could be unstoppable. Murphy asked Conner what he thought about it, to which he replied, "I'm strangely comfortable with it." They then turned to looked at Emily -Conner using the mirror instead of straining his neck- as if asking what she thought. "I'm not apart of this guys" she said raising her hands in the air to show her innocence. "Of course you are! Granted you don't take part in the killin' but we're still one of us" Murphy said with Conner and Rocco nodding in agreement.
"I guess you might as well make the most of Rocco's knowledge," Emily paused remembering what happened earlier, "But then again when he goes around shooting innocent old men, maybe he isn't the best person for the job!"
"You talkin' about Sal? Emily he was one of the motherfuckers that screwed me over! He knew what they were plannin', in fact he was the first asshole to find out!" Everyone stared at Emily in silence as she processed what he just said. She couldn't believe he was involved with the Mafia, the phrase 'never judge a book by its cover' sprung to mind. She shifted her gaze from Rocco to Murphy to Conner before she faced the window once more. "Looks like you've got yourself a system boys" they all chuckled and Emily found herself smirking. Conner began driving away from the Sin Bin to find a place to wait till Vincenzo turned up. Emily was so caught up in her thoughts that she flinched when she felt a hand rest upon her knee. Though she soon realised it was Murphy and shifted so she -most importantly her legs- were closer to him, causing his grip to tighten slightly as a silent communication for 'thank you'.
