Afraid

Prologue

He sat alone in his flat, a guitar sitting on his lap while a beer rested in his palm. His deep sea blue eyes were focused on the telephone that rested on the coffee table, praying that her name would light up on his phone and he could hear the sweet sound of her voice. His prayers were never answered, and he resorted to downing the rest of his beer as his hands began to strum mindlessly on the guitar. His thoughts were too jumbled to make much sense of the notes he was playing, his mind constantly going back to a pair of rich chocolate eyes that never seemed to leave. He groaned as he pushed his guitar off his lap and allowed it to fall to the ground, his hands instantly running through his blond dyed locks in frustration. Another groan was emitted through his soft pink lips and he threw the previously full bottle of beer towards the wall, his anger rising. It was moments like these that made her so goddamn infuritating to him, times when he wasn’t sure what she was up to or who she was with. More importantly, it was the moments that he wanted her with him, in his arms that caused him so much grief. He wasn’t supposed to be wanting her like this, they were friends if they could even call what they were doing a friendship. He wasn’t supposed to want her like this.

Across town, a beautiful brunette sat alone on a barstool. Her thick, curly mahogany hair cascaded down her back and hid much of the skin that was completely on show from her dress. Her bright, cherry red lips were pulled into a smirk as she continued to drink the alcoholic brevage that was served to her. She giggled softly at the words the famous singer beside her whispered to her, pretending as if she was remotely interested in what he had to say. In reality, her thoughts were too preoccupied on the boy she had left alone in his apartment.

“Listen love, isn’t that what you get called all the time out here? Anyway, I’m not trying to spit any game at you tonight or nothing like that, but in all honesty how about you just come home with me?” The singer asked her, his soft brown eyes glinting with mischief as they continued to dance across her skin.

Suddenly, she felt like she couldn’t breathe. Never, in her two years of working in the infuriating industry she was apart of did she ever think she’d be put in the situation where her career could potentially be on the line if she chose the wrong decision. On one hand, if she went home with the teenage heartthrob he could potentially spread her name throughout the industry and she could finally achieve her dreams. But, on the other hand if she turns him down, throws her drink on him like she wants to and rushes home to her beautiful boy who would hold her while she cried about this jerk’s insinuation of her wanting to sleep with him he could potentially black mark her. In her industry, there was nothing worse than being black marked. As she continued to debate the situation at hand, her phone began to ring for the umpteenth time in her purse. Putting a finger out to the brunette singer, she answered it quickly silently thanking whoever was on the line for a moment of thought.

“Hello?” Her soft, melodic voice asked quitely. Not having bothered to look at the name on the screen.

“Cora.” His voice breathed out. Goosebumps rose onto her skin at the complete sound of relief that was coming from his voice, it was as if he had expected to never hear her voice again.

“Is everything alright, Ni?” She asked him, silently hoping he’d tell her it wasn’t and that he needed her at that very second or else he’d be no more.

“I…I…yeah. Everything is fine Core, just checking in is all.” He told her quietly, her heart breaking with every word. And suddenly, it was as if Cora finally realized what exactly she meant to him. Nothing.

“Oh alright then, everything is fine with me. I’ll see you tomorrow, yeah?” She asked him, hoping her voice wasn’t breaking as much as she felt it.

“Sounds great, tommorow.” He told her quickly, hanging up the phone before she could mutter a good night. As she locked her Iphone, she swallowed the large lump that was forming in her throat as she picked up the drink before her and downed it in one gulp. She turned back to the brunette singer and smiled as she rested her hand on his knee.

“Your place sounds wonderful.”
