Crash and Burn Victims

IV

"No. There's no fucking way," Reueben breathed, looking out the car window. His mother was driving; he was sitting in the passenger seat. They had just passed a lovely Victorian house. The lawn was being soaked by a couple of children playing in the water hose, drowning the flower beds and upsetting their mother. She was on the massive porch yelling, but it wasn't that scene which had caught his attention.

It was Ocean, standing in the doorway with a hand on her hip.

"What did you say, darling?"

"Nothing, mom," he replied, crossing his arms. They pulled into the driveway of their new home. It was at the end of the street, several houses down from where Ocean was. As upset as Reueben was and how shocked about their damn fate, he couldn't pass up the opportunity to take another look. Peering out the window of the Toyota, he caught her eye, and watched her draw drop.

Reueben laughed, throwing a sarcastic wave.

"No. There's no fucking way," Ocean whispered, stomping back into the house.

God must really hate me.
