Dandelions and Other Wishes

Prologue

I remember laughing.

I must have been funny, the joke. I can't remember it, exactly. All I remember is that Jack told it. And the laughter. Beautiful, deep laughter from my father. I remember smiling so hard that my cheeks hurt.

Now my cheeks
really hurt. But not from smiling, I'm guessing. Smiling is from happiness. I don't feel happy.

I hear a moan or two, maybe my own. I'm not sure. I feel as if I'm not myself, but rather, I'm watching myself from a few feet above the ground. I'm disembodied, floating like a balloon. My sight is blurred and fuzzy at the same time. Not that it matters, all I see is black anyway.

The numb I feel eventually turns to hurt, hurt and pain all over. I try to call out, but I don't hear my own voice. Instead, a faint wail fills my ears. It becomes louder and louder, almost unbearable, then stops. Lights, red and blue, illuminate the black sky. Dark figures rush to and fro, one crouches by my side. Lifts a mask to my face, and the pain is gone. Only a slight throb at the back of my head.

The dark figure tries to talk to me, but I don't understand. Their voice soothes me, though, because it's deep like my father's laughter. I'm lifted into one of the large, white vehicles. I remember there being three. Three white vehicles, one occupying me.

Two occupying Jack and Father.

Her name is pronounced Hal-ee, by the way! Not Hay-lee.

This chapter's only a flashback... Pretty sad. Stay tuned!! :D
