Synthetic Lover

Devin

“Devin. How are you holding up?”

I didn’t answer.

Josh knelt down next to me and put an arm around my shoulder.
I placed the rose onto the small mound of dirt.

“Josh…”
“Yeah?”
I bit down on my lip.

“Can you promise me that we’ll never speak of this…ever again?”

He pulled me into his arms and I rested my head against his chest. He placed a kiss on my forehead like he always does.

“I promise.”

I tried my best to keep the tears from falling, but it was useless.
I placed my hand over my chest.

The mark was engraved there.

I’ve made this mistake.
I’ve increased my own pain.

I have to live with what I’ve done.

“Come on, Devin. Chris and the others are waiting for us.”
I ran my fingers against the wooden board before Josh lifted me off of the ground and pulled me into the house.

If I have learned anything through this whole ordeal, it’s that you shouldn’t mess with the workings of Life and Death.

You may think you’ve obtained happiness, but it’s an illusion.

Only misery and pain come from it.

I also learned that even though you physically lose someone, you don’t completely lose them.
They will always be with you spiritually.

Sempiternal: eternal and unchanging; everlasting.

Because in the end,

The heart is the link. And the link will remain forever.
