Synthetic Lover

Devin

I can’t believe that I’m doing this. I can’t believe that I’m doing this…

The graveyard was dark and empty. Ricky’s casket is still in the same place from earlier.

I walked to the front of it and spotted two roses: a black one and a red one, with a note attached to them.

‘You’re going to need these later. Make sure not to lose a single petal.’

I didn’t question it. I picked them up and gingerly placed them onto the ground.
I opened the casket, revealing my sweet, sleeping angel.

“Hi, Ricky.”

I smiled and twirled a strand of his hair around my finger.

“It’s okay. I’m gonna get you out of here. Don’t worry.”

His body is lying still on the floor, eight candles surrounding him.
His blazer was thrown to the side and his shirt was unbuttoned.

I opened the book back to the Resurrection spell, reading over it again.

‘Sempiterna sit aeterna et incommutabilis; aeternam.
Quamdiu subdat se praestatur hoc est.

Sed fieri debet sacrificium.’

It’s in Latin…

“Sempiternal: eternal and unchanging; everlasting.
As long as you submit, this is guaranteed.

However, a sacrifice must be made.

I froze.

A sacrifice…?

I shook off the thought and continued to read.

‘Scatter the petals of the two roses onto the corpse, keeping them inside the circle. Black for the renewal of the spirit. Red for the loved one.’

I picked up the two roses from the table and did so.

‘Drop eight drops of your blood onto the chest of the corpse.’

I grabbed a nearby pair of scissors and bit down on my lip.

‘As you drip the blood, recite these words until the eighth drop:

Tempore erat furtis. Amor unus erat pariterque in victimam.

Et vita erat sollertis messorem.

Iniusta.
Crudelia.

Reflecte gressum tempore.
Posuit vitam um in locum suum.

Quid Reduc meum.
Quid Reduc meum.
Quid Reduc meum.’

‘After the last drop, prepare to make a sacrifice.’

I knelt down in front of him and took a couple of deep breaths.

If I do this, Ricky will be alive again.
If I do this, he will be alive.

I dragged the blade of the scissors across my wrist, seething at the pain.

Soon enough, the blood started to drip.

“Tempore erat furtis. Amor unus erat pariterque in victimam.”

One…

“Et vita erat sollertis messorem.”

Two…

“Iniusta.”

Three…

“Crudelia.”

Four…

“Reflecte gressum tempore.
Posuit vitam um in locum suum.”

Five…

“Quid Reduc meum.”

Six…

“Quid Reduc meum.”

Seven…

“Quid Reduc meum.”

Eight.

Without warning, the circle of candles started to grow brighter...

...And the fire was now a dark purple.

A gust of wind circulated through the room, tossing the petals into the air along with nearby loose sheets of paper.

I couldn’t move. I couldn’t speak.

I could only watch in fear as the flames took the form of hands.

“Sacrificium fieri.”

Two hands grabbed me by the ankles.
Two more grabbed me by the arms.

“Sacrificium fieri.”

One hand held me by the neck; another pulled my hair up, fully revealing my face.
A hand was placed over Ricky’s chest.

“Sacrificium fieri.”

And the last hand reached for me.

“AHHHHHHHGH!”

I screamed in agony as two fingers pushed into my right eye.

I tried to move away, but it was no use.
The hands had a tight grip on me.

“FUCK!!! STOP!!! IT HURTS! IT HURTS!!!

I continued to scream as the fingers pushed deeper.
Tears flowed from my left eye as blood flowed from the other.

Finally, the last bit of wind blew out the candles, and the hands were gone.

My body was shaking uncontrollably. The excruciating pain in my eye was unbearable, and in shock, I vomited what little food I had in my stomach onto the floor.

The room was almost pitch black, and I tried my best to crawl over to Ricky.

However, my arms and legs grew weak, I collapsed onto the floor, and soon I lost consciousness.
