The Prince and the Thief

Chapter 3

I heard tiny knocks against the caravan walls. I rolled on to my back, opening my eyes. It felt weird to not being waking up to my dad or his children yelling. I heard the knocks again. I threw the quilt off of my body and went over to the door. I opened it, seeing Vic leaning against the caravan wall. He looked up at me and smiled.
"Bună dimineața." I gave him a look of confusion. "I am sorry. It means good morning."
"Oh. Good morning to you too."
"I brought you these." He handed me a pair of clothes.
"Thank you. I'm, uh.."
"Yes. Of course." He patted his leg and Soare followed him. I wonder if that dog stayed by me all night. I closed the doors, examining the clothing in my hands. It was a clean white shirt and tan pants that barely went past my knees. They were soft. I took of my old clothes and dressed myself in the new clothing. The cloth was warm too. I opened the door again but this time I found Vic laying on the ground. I approached him.
"What are you doing?" He got up, brushing the dirt off his clothing. He looked mad.
"Soare made me fall." I laughed. I covered my mouth when I heard the echo of my embarrassing voice bouncing off the trees. My father hated my laugh.
"I'm sorry. I did-" I took in his relaxed body as he brush his fingers across my cheek.
"You have a beautiful laugh." I blushed. He snapped out of his little daze. "You do not have to be,um.....skittish." He tapped my arm to signal me to walk.
"I'm not skittish." I noticed he was wearing the same things as me but he had a bright pink belt wrapped around his waist. His shirt was tucked in leaving nothing about his body to the imagination. He looked good in this clothing. His tan skin complemented the colors. I looked away when I realized I had been staring. I let my gaze travel along all the caravans in this tiny village. Each of them were decorated, unlike Vic's, and held a small fire pit in front of them. "Where is everyone?"
"They are eating." I threw my hands up.
"Okay. That's it."
"What? What is it?" He stopped and I bumped into his chest. He was confused.
"We are going to fix your English."
"What is wrong with it?"
"You sound like you're ancient. We need to fix that. Like when you say 'do not' there is a shortcut called 'don't'. Stop being old. You don't look older than nineteen." He raised an amused eyebrow at my rant.
"That i- that's because I am nineteen."
"Oh. Lucky guess." He smiled at me. "How did you know I didn't have a ideal lifestyle?" He poked a spot on my neck.
"No one wears makeup in random patches unless they want to cover something up." I scratched where he had poked, feeling the makeup peel off my skin. I had to cover them up. It made me feel weak when the servants would look at me with pity. We walked up to a bigger caravan and Vic pulled me inside. There was a big table with people scattered around. A small woman ran forward, talking to him so fast that I couldn't keep up. Vic let go of my hand. I hadn't even realized we were holding hands. She pointed towards a couple of chairs and we both took them.
"What did she say?" I didn't even recognize the language she was speaking. It didn't sound like what the others were speaking last night.
"She scolded me for being late and then for holding hands with someone who was unwed like me." Vic picked at the food that was on the plate with his fork. I wasn't even going to ask where they got silverware.
"How many languages do you guys know?"
"Three. Romanian, Spanish, and English. Romanian is only for full blooded. Outsiders should never know anything in that language besides little harmless phrases. Like this morning when I said good morning."
"I'm impressed." He chuckled. It was really obvious that I only knew one language. "So you will be teaching me Spanish?" He nodded.
"Some of the others do n- don't know English. Like Bunică. Her English....terrible. Spanish is okay, not exactly ideal."
"Ah." I looked at Soare. She was curled at the bottom of the stairs, waiting for us to come out. "What did you train Soare in?" I grabbed an apple, taking small nibbles.
"She knows all. Smart dog." The small woman came over and started tapping on my plate. She was speaking to me. "Just nod." I nodded. She seemed satisfied, disappearing somewhere.
"What did she say?"
"She said you're too skinny. You need to eat more. Than she was yelling about the rules. Which I need to explain to you. Come on, time for work."
"Work?" He brought me back outside.
"Yeah. You think we are just going to let you stay here for no work. Better starting now then later." I ran to catch up to him. "Don't worry. I got us an easy job." I looked over him. He was so skinny but it was a healthy skinny. I could see the muscles on his arm. He was strong. I wouldn't be surprised if he could pick a fat lady off her feet.
"So what are we doing?" He shook his head, a small grin on his face. He handed me a stick from off the ground. Soare tried to jump and bite the stick in my hand. I threw it ahead of us. She ran after it.
"You'll see when we get there." Vic touch my hand. He seemed like a really touchy person, not that I was complaining or anything. He cracked the vine covered gate open, squeezing through. I followed. "How is your ankle?" I totally forgot that it was even hurt.
"It's fine. Thanks."
"That's good. I had a healer put medicine on it." My eyes widened.
"When?" He shrugged.
"You know you mumbled in your sleep right?"
"What did I say?"
"I don't know. Our healer has a very bad understanding of English." I let a breath of relief out. Soare dropped the stick in front of Vic's feet. He threw it again. I hit him in the shoulder playfully.
"You scared me."
"What did you dream about?"
"I dreamt about the day my mom went missing." I thought about the noose. I thought about all the people that turned on my mom as she was presented as a traitor. "She was my only real family. What about you?"
"My mother and brother were killed and my father died of illness. Bunică and Anciano took me in."
"Are you okay with that?"
"They were always my family. What about you Kellin? Are you okay with that?"
"I mean yeah. I guess." He made a confused face. I think I make him do that a lot. "I was young when my mom disappeared so I got use to all the stuff my dad put me through. It just became my life."
"A father should never touch a child in such a way." I smiled at him.
"I got away. That's all that matters."
"I have a feeling you are going to live in fear that he will find you." He grabbed my hand, squeezing it lightly. "We will protect you. Welcome to the land of misfit children." He flashed me a teasing grin and I couldn't help it. I smiled back, feeling my stomach doing flips. We pasted through two trees, coming face to face with a beautiful lake. The sun hit the water just right. It was sparkling and the water looked a bright blue.
"This is amazing." He let go of my hand, walking towards the water's edge. I found an absence where his hand use to be. I want to returning it with mine. He threw a sturdy stick at my feet. It had a string attached to the end. "What's this?"
"I am taking you fishing."
