Her Black Cross
Drinking
I managed to reach home without fighting with strangers on the streets, but once I saw the empty house I wished I had. Then maybe I wouldn’t have felt that bad…and so lonely. Mia was with him again, I just knew it. I went to the bedroom and opened the second drawer from the bedside table, grabbing my second phone. I had one number for business and one for family and friends. It was easier that way.
I had one message from Anna and it said: Party at my house. Mia’s here too.
Truth was that my mood was down the road and a party wasn’t what I expected when I came back home. I only wanted Mia holding me in her arms and sleeping peacefully. It was something only she could do. Inside her arms I felt like I was in Heaven; peaceful and lovable.
I freshened up and left. Since Mia was at Anna’s, I had to go there. I was her right hand and Anna was my right hand. The three of us were supposed to have each other's back at all times, except for when I was with Helen and Mia with Havoc. I honestly hated feeling used, or using others to my advantage, but that was how everyone lived in Greece.
2020 was a very bad year for all humanity, only the strong ones and the ones who had money survived. Havoc belonged to the rich people while me and my friends to the strongest ones. We did everything in order to survive and not give up hope for a better tomorrow. It was war and a war always brings casualties…we were prepared for that.
Once I reached her house, I rang the bell and soon I was in. People were crowding around the living room and the small kitchen. It almost made me swear that I’d never go to another party that Anna held. Her house was comfortable for two people, three maximum for the year and age we live in, so a party was supposed to be out of the question.
“Dance with me,” Mia said as she nodded her head towards the makeshift dance floor, which was just a space cleared of furniture were the bodies conglomerated.
I nodded my head smiling and let myself be pulled by Mia’s small grip to the dance floor. Her arms immediately went to my neck as mine lay on her waist. I usually enjoyed dancing, as much as Mia was enjoying herself dancing with me, but I felt like an object just moving around. There was no reason for me to dance; there was nothing to be happy about.
We must have danced for about ten songs straight, no breaks or standing still; just her tiny body gyrating and swinging in time to the music.
“Come on,” She said as she disconnected from me and led me to the kitchen, “I’m thirsty and all that dancing leaves you parched.”
I nodded my head as she poured some brown, golden liquid in a plastic cup. Anna got loaded on alcohol today, various cans and containers were filled to the brim with liquid. Mia quickly downed the whole cup and reached for more. “Isn’t that enough?” I asked because Mia looked like she was quickly approaching the point where she was going to fall flat on her face.
“No.” She shook her head. “I know my limits. Six cups of beer do not get me drunk,” She said glaring at me.
I rolled my eyes, “Shut up, Mia. You don’t need to drink to act stupid. You do that fine on your own.”
She gasped loudly, her jaw falling. “I bet you’d act like a bigger idiot if you drank anything tonight with the way you look.”
“Fine, give me a cup of something. The stronger thing or whatever you drunkards refer to it.”
“Here!” She said dejectedly, although I could hear some sort of excitement in her voice. I gulped it down, my face scrunching in distaste because it was beer mixed with something else. It didn’t taste as good as vodka lemon, but I still drank it all. It burned my throat and felt hot, but my body felt hot all over afterwards. I guess that was an up, I was no longer feeling cold or not in the mood to dance. Whatever Mia had given to me had managed to lift my mood up a bit.
“More,” I asked as I shoved the cup towards Mia again, she nodded and served it up. Taking something out of the pocket of her black jean skirt and putting it inside her mouth. Her hand went around my neck and we locked lips in a kiss, her tongue entering my mouth while making me swallow two pills.
After three cups and whatever pills she had given me, my head felt heavy and Mia seemed to be moving all around me. My eyes couldn’t focus on anything and everything passing by were blurs. I could faintly hear Mia laughing as I sat down in the uncomfortable couch.
Mia came towards me, her white V-neck shirt was all wet as she took my keys from my bag saying nothing more than, ‘’I’m leaving.’’ Once she left, then I realized what she had just done. She was leaving and taking my car. I had come here for her and she was leaving me alone. Why would she choose to stay with a beast after all? In the end, beasts were left all alone to drown in loneliness. Just like how Belle left beast before he was turned to a human. Loving a beast must have been too difficult and ugly.
I abide, I didn’t feel good and I didn’t want to hear Mia’s voice anymore. I just wanted to close my eyes and get lost in the music and the welcoming alcohol. Lost…and not found.
