Sherril

Prologue

Dearest Mama,

You never believed that I would do it.

I'm doing it now.

Last week at the mall, a man in a grey jacket gave me his business card. This is the chance I have been waiting for, Mama, and I have to take it now while it is there. I knew if I told you, you would trap me in again. I am a moth flying toward a flame, and you are the glass jar holding me back. It is time to let go.

By now I will be on a Greyhound, and you are not here holding my hand because I am making it fine on my own. If you need to contact me, you can phone me via Mr H. Jones at Pine Views Apartments, Hollywood. Please do not try to find me, or bring me home. I am eighteen now, Mama, not a girl anymore. I am making my own way in life.

One day soon I will be a famous actress, and maybe then I will contact you again. Until then, this is the last letter I will write you.

With love,
Deborah.
