The Fear of Falling Apart

four

Resting a hand on her bump, Robin grimaced at the reflection that presented her in the mirror. It had been six months since she had discovered her baby; a little girl had been created. Tom had never been happier while he cheered at the news, moving them into a larger, and three bedroomed house. But at seven and a half months along, she couldn’t help but feel fat Her stomach had blossomed to the point where she could tell he was pregnant, even if she wore large t-shirts of Tom’s. Sighing, she headed into the bathroom that joined their bedroom to the nursery that would soon be claimed by their nameless daughter.

Pulling her hip length hair up into a pony tail, she couldn’t help but wish Tom was home. Currently in a business meeting in America, she had to cope without him for the next three weeks, a thought that didn’t bother her as she was used to it. Instead, she spent days with his parents, who both fussed ridiculous amounts over the newest member of the Sykes family, Carol even suggesting names. But the one person she hadn’t seen recently was Hannah. Sure, she had seen Oliver, several times as he would smile at her and nod, before looking at her bump and turning again; like he hated the thought of her being pregnant.

But as she finished the last part of her make-up, she placed the white tube of black mascara into her make-up bag, she couldn’t be worse off than she was. It didn’t help Tom was away, Christmas was approaching in less than a month and she had no presents for anyone other than Summer, whom she had brought a new hockey stick with the words ‘Rocket’ engraved in gold swirls, her nickname on the ice. But other than that, she was stuffed. Sliding on her boots, she headed downstairs, grabbing her bag and coat as she did so, sliding the navy blue fleeced garment on as she located her car keys.

Four and a half hours later, she headed back into the house carrying numerous bags, placing them all on the kitchen counter as she flicked on the kettle and searched for some noodles – craving the snack.

As she bent down to grab the saucepan however, she winced as pain ran through her stomach and up her back, a sharp single pain as she stopped, crouching in a weirdly comfortable position as she rested her hands above her head on the marble counter top, another pain making its way along her lower abdomen as she winced. But what struck her the most was the next thing, a gush of water in between her legs as she growled in anger.

“Really? You had to choose now.” She almost snarled at the fetus in her stomach, grabbing the house phone and dialing the numbers she could remember. Tom – engaged, Carol and Ian – engaged, Summer – engaged. Growling once more, she dialed the final number, the ringing sound echoing through her ears as more pain winced through her lower abdomen.

“Hello?”

“Hello? Oli, its Robin. I think I’m in labour.” She managed to choke out as another pain ran, causing her to let out a loud whimper as Oli began to instruct her to keep calm. Telling her he’ll be there as she could hear the sounds of him in the background.

“Robin, I need you to do me a favour. The hospital bag, have you packed it?” He questioned as Robin choked out a small yes. Oli then instructing her to find it as he parted from the phone, jumping into his car and speeding the way to his brother’s house while still trying to get in contact with his brother.

The hospital for Oli was one of the worst places in the world. But as he helped Robin in, he couldn’t care any less. Tom hadn’t answered; neither had his parents who he assumed were shopping still as the younger girl winced in more pain. He watched as the midwives rushed to get Robin, who was in a lot of pain as he could see, cursing loudly at Oli for his brothers mistakes as he helped her settle into the bedroom, still trying to call his idiotic brother. Still nothing.

“Oli, I swear to god. Get your brother fucking muted.” Robin whined as a midwife placed a drip in her arm, claiming that all diabetic patients needed it because of their sugar levels. Oli watched as the midwife laughed continuing to sort out the pregnant woman who was clearly in a lot of pain.

“I’ll try and talk him into it, okay?” Oli agreed as he placed the phone to his ear again. Ring. Ring. Ring. Rin-

“Hello?” A voice echoed, a female voice as Oli looked at the phone in confusion.

“Can you put Tom on please?”

“Who’s calling?” The shrill annoying vocals of the woman asked as Oli sighed.

“Tell him it’s Oli and that Robin’s in labour. He needs to get his stupid little ass back in the country before I make sure that he can’t have any more kids.” He laughed, running a hand in his hair as the midwife moved out of the room, leaving Robin and Oliver in a quiet silence, other than her breathing techniques.

"Hello, mate?" A male voice came as Oli recognized it as Tom, sleepy and slightly slurred.

"Tom! You need to get home. Robin's in labour." Oli snarled, annoyed at his brothers antics to head out of the country now, another whimper coming from the girl in the bed.

"Shit. Um.."

"I suggest you get here quick, serious. First flight, I have to go, they're being dicks about my phone. Call you when I can." Oli finished, not even letting Tom reply before hanging up the phone and heading back to the bedside of his sister-in-law (to be) allowing her to grip his hand as she pushed Tom's baby into the world.
