Seize the Day

January

The huge crystal ball was dropping in New York City counting down the minutes until the new year. Ryder watched, perhaps the last new year he’d ever see, as he downed a drink. “To making this the best year.”

He’s finally back at school after the whole winter break fiasco. The words the doctor told him are still reeling in his head. It was a tumor. The doctor used some big fancy word to describe it and explained what was going to happen from there. Ryder was still having a hard time processing it. He hasn’t told anyone, besides his parents. His mom almost refused to let him leave but understood that he wanted things to stay as normal as possible. It was an emotional goodbye as he headed back but he was glad when he finally got to see Ali again. Holding her in his arms was exactly what he needed at the moment.

“I’ve missed you so much. How are you?” She ran her delicate hand lightly across his face checking for anything wrong. He grabbed her hand in his and brought it to his lips to kiss it.

“I’m fine. Still a little sore from the crash but it’s mostly all healed now.”

“Good.”
