Second Chance
Second Chance
"It's not over yet."
This is the last sentence that the universe ever speaks to me.

The light turns green.
"If you don't want a future, Vance," Ellen says in a barely audible voice, just as I press the gas, "Then maybe you should take the ring back."
I take in my hands, resting on the steering wheel.
I immediately slam back on the breaks before I'm even a foot past the white line of the intersection.
I watch as a truck barrels across, running through the red light above.
My heart pounds.
Relief washes through me.
Right there, at the intersection, with the light green, and cars honking behind me, I throw the car into park, and go around to the passenger side door.
I open it, and pull her up and out into the rain with me.
I kiss her, and kiss her, and kiss her.
Until we both fade.
This is the last sentence that the universe ever speaks to me.
