Frozen Heart

Chapter 51

Gajeel could not understand why the thought was so hard for Jack to grasp.

Of course those kids cared about her!

Jack was probably the kindest, funniest, most understanding adult they had ever met!

Anyone would have worried after not seeing her for a month!

Scowling into his mug, the Iron Dragon Slayer tried to wrap his mind around her reaction.

“It’s hard to figure out, the first time.”

Jerking upright, his attention turned to the diminutive guild master sitting on the bar, eyes sad.

“But Jack has been around a long time. She has watched countless kids grow up, either into adults who no longer accepted her existence or criminals that delighted in hurting others.”

Makarov looked up to meet the larger mage‘s eyes, downhearted.

“After a while, anyone would wonder if they made a difference at all.”

The words sank like rocks in his stomach, and Gajeel glared down at the bar as he considered this new information.

But

“She’s got us now.” The Dragon Slayer replied gruffly. “We won’t forget her.”

Makarov smiled, nodding, at the unspoken understanding between them.

We won’t forget Jack, because she made a difference.
