Frozen Heart

Chapter 52

Jack felt extremely guilty over her reaction to the letters, though she could not control it.

Experience had taught her that getting attached always hurt.

Then why am I getting attached again?

She could not come up with an answer.

Staring blankly at the mussed sheets of her bed, Jack frowned as she tried to figure out how such a fundamental rule of her existence had been so easily tossed aside.

“Jack?”

Jolted from her thoughts, the winter guardian looked towards the door, blinking the shadows from her eyes.

“Hey, Levy.” She greeted, a reluctant smile taking shape as the Script mage hovered by the threshold with a familiar Dragon Slayer peering in behind her. “Hey, Gajeel.”

“Can we come in?” Levy wondered.

Looking between them, taking in the worried downward tilt of her mouth and the clear concern in his eyes, Jack felt something warm in her chest that answered all her questions.

Her smile grew, bright as the glare off snow, and it was as if the world turned right-side-up again with her laughter.

“Sure. Make yourselves at home.”
