On the night of Avery DeLong's seventeenth birthday her boyfriend, Derek Sanders, was killed in a car accident. Rendering her too depressed to function in society she finished the rest of her school year from home and locked herself away from family and friends.

Worrying that Avery wouldn't return to the normal teenage girl she was her parents decide to send her away to live with her older cousin, Naani, in a small town in Maine.

Despite arguments and promises to come out of her room and start to live again, Avery finds herself packed and in the car on the first day of summer vacation. Prepared for a long boring three months, Avery already starts counting down the excuses she can make to go back home.

Little did she know that the three months ahead would be filled with danger, romance, and a new perspective on everything she's ever known.
