Hel is one of Loki's children sent away by Odin, after hearing of a prophecy. Unlike her brothers, she was bestowed the chance to rule over the nine realms, but only those who die of old age or sickness. She was in charge of the underworld, Helheim.
After hearing what her father has done on Midgard, she leaves her post to try and make everything better for her father's sake. She didn't expect anything more of the trip, but things always happen when you least expect them.
