Come Fly With Me

The Way You Look Tonight

A little girl was laying in a hospital bed propped up on a stack of pillows her parents had brought from home, munching happily on a cookie. Six months ago, Wendy had been admitted to the hospital in the children's ward for her terminal brain cancer. Three months ago the Genies had decided to give little Wendy a Wish, and what she wanted more than anything in the world was; to meet Peter Pan from Disneyland. No one was really quite sure why Wendy wanted to meet Peter, maybe it's because she was named after the female protagonist in the stories, or maybe it was because he was her favorite Disney character (she'd seen every adaptation of the story she could), but everyone thought that the most likely reason Wendy Darling wanted to meet Peter Pan was because like her, he would never grow old.

For whatever reason, Wendy wanted to spend a day having adventures with the boy that never grows up. Her parents were worried that it may be too much excitement and that she would be too worn out, but they weren't going to deny their little girl her biggest wish.

So, on this bright Wednesday morning, as Wendy Darling was taking a sip from her juice box, Peter Pan came bounding into the room.

"Good morning Princess!" he exclaimed.

"Peter!" she squealed, her eyes alight.

"I see you have crumblies, what is it you have been eating? Is it maybe cookies or cake or pie, for I know it can't be ice cream if you have crumblies!"

"It was a cookie Peter!" she told him.

"Well I certainly hope it was a tasty one! Are you ready for a day of ADVENTURE!?" he asked.

"Oh yes Peter!" she giggled softly and eased herself out of the bed. Wendy was dressed in a pale blue sun dress with a white sweater and her shock of blonde curls was in a long braid down her back. Her mother helped her put on her little black shoes and reached up to grasp Peter's hand and they were out the door.

It was a windy and sunny summer day in Chicago and Peter had big plans for this little girl. He took her sight seeing, and showed great excitement at a few of the technological advances of the world, of course being a guy that worked at Disneyland and had a life outside of work he knew them all, but he could see how much the little girl would light up whenever he asked for help. First they went and saw Sears tower, then they spent the rest of the morning at a local park where Peter pushed Wendy on the swings. They ate Wendy's favorite pizza for lunch, bacon and black olive and afterwards he took her for ice cream where Peter told Wendy in secret that his favorite flavor of ice cream was pistachio, and she exclaimed that her favorite was rocky road.

After ice cream they spent the afternoon at Navy Pier in the Pier Park. They went on the Ferris Wheel where Peter claimed "it doesn't even compare to flying." He took her on the carousel and the Wave Swinger. Finally, after it seemed like Wendy was tired out, he took her to play mini-golf.

When night fell he brought Wendy back to her room in the hospital and waited until she was changed into pajamas. She climbed back up into the bed and got comfortable, settling in for the night. Peter leaned over and tucked her in.

"Remember Wendy," he whispered. "The moment you doubt whether or not you can fly, is the moment you cease forever to be able to do it."
