Behind Enemy Lines

Assimilation

"Hannah, you hungry?" Isaac asked, pulling me from the thoughts I had gotten caught up in while sitting in total silence for much too long of a time. To be honest, I was starving; I mean I hadn't eaten since dinner last night.

"Not r-" I began, but my stomach growled, revealing my lie. Isaac laughed. It was a quiet, airy sound that you'd easily miss were you anywhere other than an empty, silent living space.

"I think Derek has some food in the kitchen."

"Does this place even have a kitchen?" I asked, the tone of my voice only part mock disbelief.

"What kind of living space doesn't have a kitchen?" Isaac asked, smiling. He had a nice smile, subtle, but genuine and warm. "Come on." he motioned for me to follow him.

Isaac explained who everyone was to me over a meal consisting of food that would only ever be considered a meal in the apartment of three single men, which was then followed by a tour of the place I had just learned was considered a loft. It wasn't much, just a couple of bedrooms, a bathroom, the kitchen, and the large open area in the middle of it all. There was an area outside that you could reach by a door off to the side, not really a balcony but too big to be just a fire escape. It was nice, so we decided to sit outside for a little.

"I know the loft's not anything special, not to mention you've kinda been forced to stay and all that, but I think you'll like living here." Isaac told me, placing his hand down on the concrete behind me.

"I'm still not happy about being made to ignore the honor code." I sighed, pushing a stray piece of hair out of my face.

"Trust me, one day you'll thank us."

"I doubt that."

"No, really. This girl at school, Allison. She comes from a family of hunters. H-her mom tried to kill the guy she was seeing, who just so happened to be a wolf, and Derek ended up biting her to save him. Allison hasn't been the same since -"

"Since her mom died?"

"Yeah. She didn't even know the truth at first. Her dad made is seem like a legitimate suicide. They had a whole story and everything. She tried killing Derek when she found out it was his fault, which really, it wasn't. Her mom tried to kill Scott because she didn't wanted her daughter dating a werewolf. She didn't do it for the right reason."

"That doesn't mean she deserved to die."

"I know. You don't deserve to die either." Damn it. I hate it when people use this kind of warped logic. Tug at a person's heartstrings them make them feel bad for wanting something.

"Maybe...I guess...yeah."

"Welcome to the pack, Hannah."

"Gonna take some time to get used to that."

"What, being in a pack of werewolves?" I smile played on the corner of his lips.

"Yeah. God, my parents would kill me if they ever found out about this." I paused, realization hitting me. "Shit!"

"What?"

"How do I get this past my parents? Like, there's not going to be a body. Hiding won't be too hard. I live a few towns away, y'know, just come here to hunt. But my parents know too much. If they don't have confirmation of my whereabouts - dead or alive - they're gonna suspect something."

"G...good point." He ran his hands through his hair, his eyebrows furrowing as he thought. "None of the others really had families, I'm not really sure-"

"Others?"

"Later, okay. We need to ask Derek and Peter about this as soon as they get back."

Great, just when I thought life was all good. I should've known better. Life is never "all good" when werewolves are involved.

WOW THIS CHAPTER WENT A WHOLE LOT BETTER THAN I EXPECTED. Like really, I wasn't sure how I was gonna make this work. But I think I see it now. And you'll see it soon.

I'll give you the next chapter when I get 5 subscriptions or likes. Gotta make sure all of my readers are still alive and haven't been stunned by those masked things from last night's episode. Getting corny now. I'll leave it at that.
