The Day I Met You

Musty smells of dirt and beer filled my nostrils as I walked into the stadium. Bike engines whined, but they continued to push on. The crowd jumped to their feet and cheered loudly. I didn’t know what was happening. “Renner just broke last year’s record!” the announcer’s voice boomed across the stadium. I walked towards a black t-shirt labeled ‘STAFF’.
“Can you believe this, man,” the shirt was saying. A 6’0 tall man bouncing with excitement did not seem like the best person to interrupt, but I needed help. I tapped the bouncing shoulder.
He didn’t turn away from the action as he said, “What do you want?”
“Where is the Skate event,” I asked.
“Next door… Oh, my god!! Buyten just challenged!” The man turned towards me. His tanned skilled made his white teeth sparkle, and his blue eyes seemed friendly enough.
“Thanks.” I turned away only to run into a pair of green eyes.
“Watch it, now. I gotta stick a trick in a minute.” He had tattoos on both sides of his neck, and a smaller tat right below his left eye.
“Sorry, good luck.” I stepped around him.
“Thirty-nine feet! Every jump is a new record,” the announcer boomed as the doors opened.
Chills arose across my arms as the sun illuminated my skin. I scanned the building across the street, but I couldn’t register the faces. I started to step forward, but something pulled me back. Long fingers wrapped around my upper arm turned my body. Those green eyes flooded my vision. A blank stare was etched onto my face, but he held an intense stare. We stood for what seemed like hours staring at each other before I heard my name.
“Reylyn!” Someone shouted a second time.
I saw her. Her beanie covered her blond hair. Her smile didn’t quite reach her blue eyes as she smiled and waved. There was some other emotion behind those eyes though; something that resembled disappointment. I wriggled away from his grasp before I turned away from him to walk across the street to greet the speaker of my name.
