The Day I Met You

015

I walked out of my room to hear screaming. The gang had apparently started without me, but I wasn’t too mad. I walked up the steps to the 18-20 ft. runway while putting my hair in a loose bun. Jamie waved madly at me as she did a kick flip while waiting for her turn. Danny was laughing wildly while leaning against a rail. I looked down to see Pastrana rolling on the ground.

“He over flipped,” Danny informed me though bouts of laughter. Pastrana jumped up raised his arms over his head and screamed ‘YES!’ before running towards the top.

“Is it my turn yet,” Jamie whined. Danny nodded. She raced down the runway and actually made it across the gap before her board wobbled from beneath her. Danny clapped for her as well as the girls. I looked around before realizing Deegan and Loza were nowhere to be found.

“Where’s…” I started but Danny raised an eyebrow that made me rethink asking.

He laughed before shaking his head, “they started on the baby ramp to warm up.” I couldn’t hide my smile. “Hey, kid, show them how it’s done!”

“You gonna go down with me?” It was my turn to raise an eyebrow. He started to shake his head until I added ‘old man’.

“Get a board, kid.” I laughed as I took a spare board from the corner. Danny set up on the left side as I set up on the right. I smiled at my favorite uncle as he nodded. We pushed off the top of the ramp at the same time. We went racing down the runway. He did a massive front flip over the gap that made my 360 look weak. We went through every twist and turn of the ramp, Danny showed me up the entire time, but I didn’t fall. I heard Pastrana scream my name.

“Fearless,” Danny laughed as he came to a stop.

We walked to the top of the ramp. Loza was waiting at the top with the second biggest smile I’d ever seen, the first biggest smile was plastered all over Pastrana’s face. “I thought you said I was the fearless one,” Pastrana laughed as he wrapped his arms around me. I kissed his cheek as I hugged him back.

“You’re always going to be my fearless goofball,” I laughed.

“I’m jealous,” I heard Loza half laugh. I looked over my shoulder where he was talking to Deegan. “I had to practice and she just jumps right in.”

“Get over it Loza. She’s the niece of the guy that built this monster.”

“That’s why I’m jealous, dude!” They started laughing. I walked over to Loza who was checking out the scenery of the four-story monster ramp. It is by far the biggest skate ramp built; it’s the pure perfection of Danny Way’s imagination.

“I promised I’d ride the Mega Ramp with you, but you weren’t here,” I stated with my hand on my hip. A crooked grin played across my lips.

“That was a warm up. You gonna keep to your word,” he asked with a lopsided grin of his own.

“Let’s do this.”

We waited for Pastrana to make it over the gap and off the ramp before we pushed off the top. This time I set up on the left and Loza on the right. I outshined him by landing a double back flip across the gap while he just jumped. We pushed and pulled for the best tricks through the whole run. He did better on the street section, I was beast on the vert part, and we tied on the quarter pipe.

We finished our run on our feet, which surprised both of us. When we got back to the base of the ramp everyone had climbed down. Jamie wanted to go for a swim and most of the girls agreed with her. Pastrana twisted his ankle, so he was going to rap it with ice. Deegan was going with Jamie and the girls while everyone else was going to the beach. Loza opted to hang out on the Mega Ramp, and I decided I was going to go find that private pool Uncle Danny told Loza we could use. What can a little sun hurt?
