The Day I Met You

008

Those brownish green eyes were etched into my brain. I ran, and I ran, but those eyes were still there haunting me. I continued to match Jamie step for step. The first mile was easier than I thought it would be; she continued to run at a medium pace, and I made sure to keep up.

I wasn’t paying attention to where we were going. I took in the fresh air and sunshine while my muscles worked; I never thought they would come to a screeching halt. I breathed in, and the smell of the ocean lighted floated on the air. I knew where she was taking me; there was no way I was going.

My calf muscles quivered, lungs burned, and the air wouldn’t flow through my burning lungs. "Jay…” I trailed off. She kept running. “Jamie…” My lungs felt like they stopped working, my legs wouldn’t carry me another inch, and the smell of the ocean was stronger.

“Rey,” Jamie yelled as she turned back. Her legs continuously ran in place. She looked down at my limp legs. Disappointment spread clearly across her features.

“I can’t, Jay,” I said as I lowered my head. There was something suddenly interesting about the crack in the pavement.

“Yes, you can, Reylyn. You need to do this. We don’t have to run, but we do have to get to the sand today.”

“I can’t do it, Jamie!”

“Get off your ass now,” she ordered.

“You don’t understand what it was like, Jamie. No one understands what it was like,” I hissed at her knees.

“We’ve all had accidents. I’ve fallen off my board plenty of times, and Sally has had problems too,” she tried to reassure me.

“You didn’t legally die when you fell off your board,” I yelled. I forced the strength of my anger into my muscles. The anger forced me off the ground.

“No, I didn’t, but you could tell me. Reylyn, you have to overcome this fear.”

“I don’t have to do a damn thing, Jamie.” I turned away from her, away from the ocean, as I began to walk away.

“Reylyn!” She yelled, “stop and think about this for a second.”

I turned towards her, blood boiling in my veins, “I do think about this. I think about this every day of my life.”

My eyes burned with anger. I knew I shouldn’t be too angry with her. She was my best friend; the girl that kept everything together and the one thing left of my past that linked me to the deadly waves of that salty water. “I’m not ready to face it, Jay, and you can’t make me.”

I turned and walked away from her. She didn’t protest my leaving this time. I caught the first cab I saw and went home. Little did I know I would have a bar full of FMXers ready to party again before they all go home.
